There was a potato famine in Ireland. The potato crop failed due to blight and as potato was the main part of most people’s diet at the time, millions died due to starvation.
The starvation wasn’t due to exporting potatoes. It was due to the housing policies at the time. The British divided plots into so small of units that the only thing the Irish had the room to grow in enough quantity to feed themselves was potatoes. So, when the potato blight hit, most of the Irish lost the ability to feed themselves and massive quantities either starved to death or emigrated to survive.
Basically, the potatoes were effected by blight (a potato disease so we couldn’t eat it). We ate potatoes because we could grow them on the small bits of land we had and they were pretty easy to grow.
All the wheat and other stuff was taken by the British for their own needs. That’s why we didn’t just eat something else.
One million died, one million emigrated.
There’s a song called The Fields of Athenry about a guy who gets sent to Australia (then a penal colony) for trying to steal some food so his children don’t starve. Although it’s better known in England as “The Fields of Liverpool” as a football chant.
In other news, I read a book about some Native Americans that tried sending food over to us because they heard about the Famine. Not sure if it’s true but I thought it was a nice story.
(And as an Irish person, the humour of this joke is dark but it’s pretty funny all the same ;D )
While it is true that America sent Ireland aid, it was not due to the large Irish population as they were only arriving as immigrants and were looked down upon. NINA being a common slogan meaning No Irish Need Apply. All the Catholic countries also sent a fair whack of aid, but for every 1 grain ship going in 3-5 were leaving.
that’s racist!
No, that’s a pronoun.
I’m experiencing a humor famine.

i still dont get it.
Also, there was the time the English exported all if not most of the Irish’s potatoes and left them to starve. ;3
IRA propaganda and you still fall for it even now?
Actually it was our grains and livestock they exported. Our population is still lower than it was in 1845 by about 50%.

Thank you all guys for explaining.
i think he meant ‘hash’ hohoho
HAPPY SAINT PATRICK’S DAY!
Wait…
Actually, this is a common misconception:
The English only left the potatoes, of which there are many varieties. Only ONE type (species, if you will) of potato was effected by the blight.
I WILL NOT SPECIES!

I don’t think it was the Native Americans, but America did send us some grain because of the large amount of Irish living in America in that time.

Agreed. The large Irish population in America is due to the potato blight and didn’t really exist prior to it.
I guess that’s why I’m here.
Heh my irish mate told me that while i was in Ireland, I still find it funny
