Tsunami in Japan: A Wave of Ignorance

LET ME BE CLEAR. This is in no way meant to belittle the events of this morning. The earthquake/tsunami in Japan is a tragedy, and anything we can do to help the victims of this natural disaster would behoove us as a species.

That being said, I’ve been inundated today with submissions featuring indifference and ignorance of the highest order, and it is these people who are the target of today’s post.

So Over It

For some, everything always happens for a reason. While Fox News readers credit the “Big Guy Upstairs,” others, as you’ll see below, are more inclined to believe karma caught up with The Land of the Rising Sun.

Someone’s Been Watching Too Much Whale Wars

And, because this is the internet, someone had to go and mention politics…

Help Yourself

SUM F**KIN SENSE

“No Tollerance for Ignorance”

Also a “tradgedy:” August 6, 1945 and August 9, 1945

And, because this is the internet, someone had to go and be a racist f**k…

Ethnic Cleansing

Before you go swearing off faith in humanity (if you haven’t yet), remember that this is Failbook, so you’re seeing a smattering of the worst we have to offer. Don’t be these people. Do what you can to help.

    Morons

  2. Dustin says:

I hope every one of these people lose their homes tonight to some sort of natural disaster, and get help from nobody to recover from their loss.

    • Aaldkfj says:

      I agree

    • Reann says:

      Exactly. -_-

    • Karmagirl says:

Like ^ these people are evil. Have they all forgotten Hiroshima??

      • wasd says:

Clearly… These people are uneducated. Don’t get me wrong, Pearl Harbor was a tragedy, 100′s of soldiers died, but we killed tens of thousands of men women and children. If their Karma logic is right, then Hurricane Katrina is payback. Thats my two-cents on Hiroshima.

        • Bobolob says:

Not wanting to belittle the earthquake/tsunami victims, but you should at least get your facts straight. 2400 US military personnel were killed in the Pearl Harbor attack. 106,000 US military were subsequently killed by the Japanese in the Pacific during WWII, and the Japanese killed roughly 25 million Chinese. Until Hiroshima/Nagasaki they refused to surrender.

          • Bobicus says:

Has anyone considered that the vast majority of the Japanese probably weren’t even born then?
Most Germans are sickened by the events of WWII and the Holocaust, this is hardly different.

            • Neil (SM) says:

              THIS.

A-bombs or not, the people who live in Japan today had absolutely NOTHING to do with Pearl Harbor. They are not at war with the US.

Well at least 99% of them, perhaps. Maybe there’s some WWII soldiers still living today, maybe even some who participated in that event. And I’m certain they were following orders to complete a mission for their country, the same as our soldiers and fighter pilots are trained to do.

This is the same kind of crap that leads to the “ethnic cleansing” and other ridiculous fighting that went on around the breakup of Yugoslavia. People still holding resentment about WWI (not 2!) Even longer afterwards, people still needed to finish arguments started by their great-grandparents years before them.

Are these people mad about pearl harbor wishing ill will on England also for 1812? When does it end?

          • Violet says:

They refused to surrender because the Russians were trying to invade northern Japan.

          • Bolobob says:

If you’re going for exact historical accuracy, you should know that Japan was already looking to surrender unconditionally (as America wanted) before Hiroshima and Nagasaki were bombed.

            • Horatio says:

Actually, the surrender message was already received before the second bombing, but the planes were already outside of communication range.

Technically speaking, that means America has killed tens of thousands of innocent civilians during peace-time.

      • ugh says:

I’m pretty sure they would say, “it was just an accident. We aren’t trying to show off our nuclear weapon. Honest.”

      • ferryman says:

Except for the hundreds of foreign volunteers cleaning up after Katrina, the millions of dollars raised abroad to help the victims of 9/11 and such…

    • B says:

As much as we can all agree these are major douchebags who should try thinking before opening their mouths for once, that’s not something you should wish on ANYBODY. :(

    • HvsL says:

actually, I hope someone from another country comes in to help them and they are CRUSHED by the realization of what a jack off they were. never gonna happen, cause people like this are the center of their universe, but god it would be good!

      • WHAT WHAT WHAT?? says:

        touche.

      • Ish says:

Oh did anyone else see on the news the Americans all tearing up and going on about how “devastating” and “tragic” it was when they copped a few waves and some luxury boats got smashed. I mean yes it’s not a ncie thing to happen but perspective people!

        • Neil (SM) says:

I agree to a point. But at the same time, I think there’s always somebody who has it worse than you do. You still should be able to grieve or be affected by your own minor tragedies despite that.

Although it definitely would be more than a bit tacky to complain loudly about losing your luxury boat in front of a group that just lost their homes.

    • koloheiole says:

amen, they don’t know wut it’s like, and maybe they need to

    • teh d00che – Presidon’t of teh Internetz says:

      Seconded.

  6. Ajith says:

Wow, what a bunch of low minded idiots.

  7. TheTokiEffect says:

Well, this is what being American does to you.

  8. Bryanna S says:

why do people always seem to think other countries didn’t come to our aid after 9/11 and katrina? Do people really think we took care of it all by our lonesome?

    • Donna says:

Wish there was a like button :)

    • Patrick says:

*applauds* And yes, they actually do believe that. And will argue with you when you point out the foreign aid that we received after the events. Either you’re making it up, or it “isn’t anything near like what WE do!”

      • NIP says:

It’s actually “worse”. Many countries were reading support when Katrina started to come close, Germany had to fully loaded airplanes with specialists and supplies including heavy volume pumps sitting on the tarmac for days waiting for the US to request the aid. Bush and his cronies said no. They did not want to accept outside help.

      • K da MB says:

You’re just making that up, because I actually disagree with you with no understandable argument apart that I think that my country can beat yours.

    • K da MB says:

The worst in that is that they believe firmly that these were the worst events to happen anywhere anytime. So sad is ignorance when paired with patriotism.

      • here's an idea says:

Well, they did end up being the worst events to happen anywhere anytime, ‘coz they led to the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq (governments are still unstable, people are still dying, so no point saying that America went in to liberate the people and save their lives – a country’s fate should be the decision of its own people, like in Tunisia and Egypt).

But that said, they turned out to be far more worse for people abroad than the Americans themselves. (For the record, I’m from a country that sees far more terrorist attacks and loss of lives than the US. We don’t go around declaring wars.)

      • Frank says:

I think even some unfriendly countries like Venezuela even helped us out after Katrina. I hate ignorance more than anything else.

    • canadaftw says:

I remember we had firefighters here that went over to help.

    • Trix says:

Yep, $850 million of donations + supplies and personnel were EVENTUALLY accepted by Bush’s idiots. https://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=0ApBgkIPqYOCgdDVGMXNsTGhvM1FWTnNKeUpFQmVXY2c&hl=en

Plenty more that was still turned away (and granted, accepting a few dozen aid personnel can be more logistic hassle than it’s worth)

      • hdpace says:

As someone who was in LA when Katrina hit, I must stand up for Bush. He actually had his hands tied because Blanco (our governor at the time) was refusing state of emergency or something like that. Nagen (N.O.’s mayor) was being equally stupid, so Bush couldn’t do much.

    • PGies says:

wait you mean the government didn’t just write another blank cheque?

  9. CrystalG says:

It is what it is… I have had a few choice status updates show up on my newsfeed today as well. These are the same folks that would be miffed if no one cared if their house was the one that got tagged by a tornado.

  10. Kaylee says:

Sadly he’s right. Most people are the biggest hypocrites. True, it wasn’t a hurricane, but that’s irrelevant. Nobody cares about a certain person/place/etc until something bad happens, then they’re the most devoted Christians “praying” for them when they don’t think of God all year around.

    • randomgirl says:

I agree, but I have a couple friends who continually post religious stati so they aren’t being hypocrites, and one friend who is from Japan (born there but grew up in the US) whose every other post is about how great Japan is and how she’s going to live there one day, and my aunt lived there for a couple years and so my whole family has been at least somewhat inundated with Japanese culture.

So their praying is real, and my and my friend’s and family’s pain is real at this event.
(In defense of the honest people on facebook today)

    • FERN says:

That is, like you said, very sad and also very true. The people of today… :L

      • anon says:

I don’t understand, why would you care if nothing bad happened? There’s nothing to care about right?

        I agree 100% on praying though…
“The way to look like you’re helping while doing nothing”

    • Mushaboom says:

You really think that nobody cares about JAPAN? Heck, that kind of thing might be true for countries that aren’t first-world, but Japan is at the front of the pack when it comes to important countries, both to the world and to the United States. I’m not sure myself, but I’ve heard people say that their response to this disaster has been first-rate. Don’t go thinking that anyone underestimates or undervalues them– they gave us the friggin’ POKEMANZ.

    • Dan says:

      God watches you poop.

    • Derek says:

Why would anyone be worried about Japan before the earthquake?

It’s a first-world country with a 95% literacy rate, the highest life expectancy in the world and a strong economy.
They didn’t need any help before yesterday.

Haiti, on the other hand, was struggling before their earthquake, but was mostly ignored. THAT was hypocrisy.

      You fail at global awareness.

      • jerrum says:

you fail, japans economy was in the toilet and now will be in a worse way.

        • Onceupop says:

Japan’s economy is the third biggest in the world. It had a minor decline, which allowed China to become the second biggest, but that didn’t instantly turn them into a thirld-world country.

  11. milieus says:

In response to “Chris,” yes, I do know people in Japan. Thanks for asking. Not everyone lives in a hole and only communicates with people in their own little town.

    • Gojerr says:

Agreed. My cousin is actually stationed over in Japan. Far enough South he wasn’t really affected, thank God, but you can be sure he’s going to be involved in the recovery effort.

    • joma says:

Even if you don’t know anyone in Japan, there is a thing called empathy! These statuses makes me go -.- -.- -.-

      • Ravenclaw Borg says:

Yes, I agree; empathy and compassion are humanity’s best traits. When it fails to use these, I can see why Q believes/believed/will believe we are uncivilized.

I hope we can eventually come to some mutual agreement that whoever needs help should be helped, or at least not made fun of.

    • Patrick says:

Yep, add to that that the tsunami hit Hawaii, Alaska, and the coast of the pacific northwest, and Northern California.

Or the fact that many schools have students in other countries (including mine). Plus our military bases, and American families that may be on holiday or there for work.

Of course that requires too much thought for some people.

    • Hagerwife says:

Yes! Thank you! My cousin was holed up in a bank because he was downtown when it started!

  12. Zak Bagan Fangirl says:

They’re beyond morons. They’re just a waste of space and ignorant losers and karma will get them in time.

  13. dudette142 says:

…And thus the ignorant cause countries to get bad reps. It’s like all the smart people go underground.
FYI to the ignorant, United States bombed Hiroshima and Nagasaki and also did other terrible things so don’t go blaming Japan for everything

  14. Sharpcircle says:

good grief. It’s noticeable that all these seem to come from the good ol’ US of A. I’m just surprised someone hasn’t blamed the muslims yet.

  15. Minxy says:

Eugh this makes me feel sick!

  16. Herse182 says:

It’s stuff like this that makes me embarrassed to be white.

    • Dan says:

So our inability to dance, poor dress sense, penchant for ridiculous accents, hideous interior design aesthetic and unexplainable attraction to the colour beige is totally cool with you?

    • Bobicus says:

The most ignorant of them was black. Race has no bearing on ignorance. I agree with your sentiment, but I personally feel that it’s stuff like this that makes be embarrassed to be from the Western world. That said, the rest of the world is unlikely to be much better.

    • PGies says:

you’re white? I thought you were a human!

      race is inconsequential

  17. dfgh says:

    Off with their heads!

    • skyman724 says:

Yes. No sex for them! (well, the guys at least) That way they stay out of the gene pool!
(I hope you see what I did there………….)

  18. Brittany says:

these people are dumb and i hope that something happens to them and their houses and possessions and NO ONE comes to help them out AT ALL!!!!!!!!!!!!

  19. Daniel says:

Yes, I also express my fake outrage at these people.

  20. brokensaint says:

you know… i did my own insensitive comment today saying: run! it’s gojira! still, a tsunami is a tsunami but i’m thoroughly annoyed with the whole solidarity thing over a quake that keeps happening (if you got earthquake app on iphone you’ll know what i mean here) over and over and over for the past 2 freakin’ days. not just but the epicenter is in the damn ocean floor!

    • Nicorp97 says:

      ^ I agree

    • Patrick says:

I don’t need the app for that. I get USGS email alerts for almost every earthquake in the world.

This was the strongest quake Japan has experienced in over a CENTURY. It was over one hundred TIMES as strong as the Northridge earthquake in California.

You clearly haven’t watched any of the video footage of the quake, and are unaware that a devastating tsunami also hit Japan after the fact.

And I’m not sure what you mean by ‘a quake that keeps happening…for the past 2 freakin’ days.’ Unless it’s one of the more than one HUNDRED aftershocks, many of which are as strong as, or stronger than, quakes to hit and damage California.

      • hmmm says:

Minor correction: It’s the strongest quake to hit Japan EVER, and #5 in all recorded history.

Brokensaint’s comment is so poorly worded that I’m not entirely sure WHAT s/he’s trying to say, but it seems like the gist is, “There have been earthquakes in that area for two days, so why hasn’t the entire country just shrugged and said, ‘Time to move’ already? If there are still people trying to live there after 48 hours of earthquake activity then they deserve what they get.”

However, the stupidity inherent in THAT thought is so mind-boggling that I actually CAN’T believe that’s what s/he is trying to say, so I dunno.

Just in case that IS what his/her point is, I’d like to mention that the #2 largest quake in recorded history was in Alaska. Alaska has three entries in the top 24 (dating from the 1950s/60s). Japan has… one. This one. I wonder if Brokensaint is “thoroughly annoyed” that there are still people living in Alaska and that the entire state wasn’t abandoned within 48 hours of the last major quake there.

        • Mushaboom says:

Our Gulf Coast should’ve been evacuated years ago by that logic. All those hurricanes!

        • Ravenclaw Borg says:

Well, it’s hard to find a place without threat of natural disasters. You have to worry about earthquakes (plus their aftereffects) and volcanoes near the tectonic plate boundaries. You have to worry about floods near bodies of water, and tornadoes in flat country. I could go on and on.

Riddle me this: Why do people keep exploring and heading into various dangers?

          • anon says:

            I agree with Dan.

But yeah, Britain is pretty damn safe from natural disasters i think :P

Only ever get floods and minor hurricanes.

            • Horatio says:

We Dutch, even though most of us live below the sea level, pretty much don’t have any natural disasters. The only floods occurring happen in the more ”hilly” area (a whopping 300 meters above sealevel! w00t!)

              Irony much?

              • Onceupop says:

We, Belgians, don’t have any natural disasters AND we live above sea level. Unless you count our politicians, which are a form of a disaster created by nature.

  21. Shantz says:

apparently no one remembers Hiroshima and the atom bomb we dropped on them, what ever a country does to use has a 80% better chance of being remembered than what we do to them

    • Deb says:

Twice. We bombed them twice. Both atom bombs.

      • Julia says:

To add to that, we attacked the INNOCENT. As in women, children, and men that weren’t even involved.

      • NIP says:

You forgot the fire bombing of Tokyo:

The bombing of Tokyo, often referred to as the “firebombing”, was conducted by the United States Army Air Forces during the Pacific campaigns of World War II. The U.S. mounted a small-scale raid on Tokyo in April 1942, with large morale effects. Strategic bombing and urban area bombing began in 1944 after the long-range B-29 Super Fortress bomber entered service, first employed from China and thereafter the Mariana Islands. B-29 raids from those islands commenced on November 17, 1944 and lasted until August 15, 1945, the day Japan capitulated.[1] The air raid of 9-10 March 1945 was one of the most destructive bombing raids in history.

        [...]

19 February 1945: 119 B-29s hit port and urban area
        25 February 1945: 174 B-29s dropping incendiaries destroy ~28,000 buildings
        4 March 1945: 159 B-29s hit urban area
10 March 1945: 334 B-29s dropping incendiaries destroy ~267,000 buildings; ~25% of city (Operation Meetinghouse) killing some 100,000
2 April 1945: >100 B-29s bomb the Nakajima aircraft factory
3 April 1945: 68 B-29s bomb the Koizumi aircraft factory and urban areas in Tokyo
7 April 1945: 101 B-29s bomb the Nakajima aircraft factory.
        13 April 1945: 327 B-29s bomb the arsenal area
        15 April 1945: 109 B-29s hit urban area
24 May 1945: 520 B-29s bomb urban-industrial area south of the Imperial Palace
26 May 1945: 464 B-29s bomb urban area immediately south of the Imperial Palace
20 July 1945: 1 B-29 drops a Pumpkin bomb (bomb with same ballistics as the Fat Man nuclear bomb) through overcast aiming at but missing the Imperial Palace
8 August 1945: ~60 B-29s bomb the aircraft factory and arsenal
        10 August 1945: 70 B-29s bomb the arsenal complex

      • tamara says:

You forget the carpet bombing of japanese cities. We killed 60,000 Tokyo residents in one night – the same amount of civilians who died in the UK throughout the whole of WW2.

        • anon says:

I really need some of these statistics. I love Japan and just need to quote some numbers when ever i see an American hating on them for Pearl Harbour.

      • Organs says:

And don’t forget the radiation poisoning that has lingered in those cities for generations a la Three Mile Island. Survivors who married and procreated had kids who were born poisoned. And so were their kids to some degree.

  22. Magic_pineapples says:

It’s times like this that I wish it were possible to punch someone through a computer….

  23. jay says:

“the japanese f*cking bombed our country”.
you’ve clearly never heard of hiroshima or nagasaki, have you?
you know, the only time a nuclear weapon has EVER been detonated in anger… by the US. killing hundreds of thousands of japanese civilians…

    • Liss says:

I was thinking that, surprising how they chose to forget that titbit of information

    • Kris says:

      ***** 5 star response jay!

Not to mention about 99% of Japanese citizen were NOT alive at the time of Pearl Harbor. So God visits “karma” and vengeance on innocents? Not the God I believe in

    • Dawgskitten says:

That’s exactly what I was thinking when I read that. I also know people in Japan, and I am hoping that they are okay. Although I wouldn’t call them ‘friends’ I still care for them and wish them the best. However, these are very ignorant people who have probably never established any type of friendship outside of thier hole of a town. If I ever see a post like this on MY newsfeed, I’ll go balisttic on them. :)

  24. E says:

I love how some people just *have* to go back to something that happened almost 70 years ago…

  25. Charky says:

    Disgusting.

  26. Mission: Incomprehensible says:

Sadly, none of this surprises me at all. I remember seeing things like this in the wake of the Arizona shootings from someone I consider a friend. Unfortunately I didn’t have a chance to get a screenshot to upload to Failbook before the post was removed!

  27. Sarrita says:

    This is disgusting :/

  28. Yay Theology says:

America stood alone after Katrina? Nope, after 9/11? Hell no! Other countries help America, the LEAST anyone could do is pray.

  29. Jennifer says:

Ignorance abounds. These people make me sick.

  30. Nico says:

The shouting moron is totally recognizable, you can read his whole name. Let’s friend him :P

  31. Tablo says:

You don’t have cable huh? Then you could still watch TV with antenna (which is the best source for HD channels, BTW) or get news from other sources.

    • Em says:

No cable, but apparently internet…and still doesn’t know what’s going on. Yeah.

    • Deb says:

He has the internet, has time to waste on Facebook, but still doesn’t know what the heck is happening around him. Duh!

    • hdpace says:

I understand your frustration with ignorance, but some people don’t bother with that stuff. For instance, my husband and I were stationed in CA recently and since I mostly watch movies and he mostly plays video games, we decided not to bother with cable or anything of that sort. For that reason and the fact we were so far away from everything, we didn’t hear about a lot. That being said, I did often catch the really big stuff on the radio or I would hear about it from friends or family, but there’s a lot that I’m just now finding out since we moved.

      • Patrick says:

I don’t have cable either, but I’m aware of world events. Of course I CHOOSE to be, via emailed headlines from 2 Australian papers, and breaking news alerts to my email from NY Times and LA Times. I doubt that many of the people in the OP could name either of the papers -_-

        • Default User says:

I actually get a large amount of my news via FB. Of course, I have a large number of friends who regularly post news related stories. I do look at actual news sources occasionally, but I find most of the stories(and almost all the major stories) have been posted by friends already, often with multiple friends posting opposing views of the same stories.

  32. Chuckles says:

Ugh…that last one just made me feel ill.

I’m Australian, and we copped some rough treatment from the Imperial Army in WWII as well, but for the love of Christ, it was war time and more importantly, IT WAS 65 YEARS AGO!

    Bah..

  33. Racioppi says:

Wow people are idiots. Yah Pearl Harbor happened but as a result we frigging nuked Nagasaki and Hiroshima. I swear the internet can find the most racist, ignorant people that exist on this planet.

  34. J says:

Wow. How incredibly heartless. Sadly, I’ve been seeing this all over the internet today.

  35. Not those people says:

I realize this is a concentrated dose of douche-baggery taken from probably a very large selection of Japan-related posts, but still. People astound me. They really do.

  36. k- says:

I cannot believe what I’ve just read… Is this actually what we – the luckiest and most priviledged continent in the world – have come to?

    • Dan says:

      *country

Massive poverty in Central America – not so lucky/privilidged.

    • (required) says:

How are you the luckiest and most priviledged continent in the world? I’m not sure which country you’re from but isn’t that a bit, you know, over the top? I’m sure a lot of countries would consider themselves “the luckiest and most priviledged”…

      • Bobicus says:

The continent of North America probably is, as although the West of Europe is about the same, it’s balanced out by East Europe. Just sayin’.

  37. Me says:

Sure. Japan bombed pearl harbor. But didn’t the US in return bomb japan with nuclear weapons? Leave the past where it is b!tches and stop the hate.

  38. Oh geez... says:

Someone didn’t censor a name. I found the dumbass easily on Facebook. And his profile is pretty much public, so you can read everything on his wall. The guy’s a moron who can’t type properly and apparently broke his Caps Lock key because it’s permanently stuck like that.

Also, Hiroshima and Nagasaki… So no.

  39. Shujoxa says:

(to the tune of Lee Greenwood’s “God Bless the USA”) And I wish I weren’t an American, so I wouldn’t be grouped with them. And I find it sad that people die so that fools like them can live…

I could go on, but you get the point…

  40. fgsfds says:

You really should post their full names. I’m up for a bit of trolling, and possibly some password cracking.

    • Oh geez... says:

One of the posts shows the guy’s full name, I looked him up and his profile is public, you can see his wall posts and all.

    • Dare says:

So am I. I wonder if we’d still be able to find them.

    • jay says:

and from his wall, it seems like he doesn’t even understand how to turn capslock off…

      • wasd says:

or how to spell, and power to this girl Neissi, she fought his arrogance with just compassion, anger, and epicness.

    • Kits says:

I’ll give you a hint then:
      Chris Stackz

At least it says that on one of the above pictures where they’ve “forgotten” to blurr the last name? :P
Gogo, troll and password cracking plix ;)

  41. vsnitc says:

not even worth my comment.. and now i wasted 3 seconds of my life commenting

  42. Brendan Richards says:

What would they know about having feelings for those who have lost family or friends as a result of that tsunami?

  43. Jenny K says:

And you KNOW that all the references to Pearl Harbor are only made because these people get their education from movies…

I can’t believe people still act mad about it – they weren’t even alive then, and of course the bombs in Japan were already mentioned, and then the US had tons of Japanese immigrant CITIZENS rounded up and put in camps, too. If someone’s looking for “payback” against the Japanese, I’d say they already got it in spades!!! Let’s move on!

    • fwgwg says:

Well then should that mean that native americans should just forget about what was done to them and not get their free money? Not that I’m disagreeing but still, there’s a hole in your logic.

      • Darqmann says:

Nah, because the damned colonials are still there. If there had been a war with the Native Americans that left thousands dead and then the europeans went home again then yes they should put it in the past, but the Americas still are litterally over-run with colonists and thier offspring that have clearly out-stayed thier welcome.

  44. seddal says:

    “Remember Pearl harbour”??
How about remembering Nagasaki and Hiroshima too??

I wonder where some americans learn history…

    I’m not angry today.
I just laugh of you ignorants.. :)

  45. PhD in Fail says:

The names of these guys don’t deserve the privilege of being censored.

Oh, and they’re really ignorant. They’re all f***ed up about Pearl Harbor. Guess what, there’s also Nagasaki and Hiroshima. At least Pearl Harbor, despite being a surprise attack, was aimed primarily at a military establishment. The A-Bombs, on the other hand, killed more civilians than military.

I want to give the same treatment to those guys and insult their country, but the nice people of America don’t deserve to be grouped with these lowlifes (and I have no right to do so). Somebody toss them into the Pacific Garbage Patch.

    • NIP says:

Let’s not forget the firebombing of Tokyo. One night destroyed approx. 25% of the city and killed well over 100K people.

  46. San says:

omg.. reading this sort of stuff that people have written is so horrible.. i cannot believe some people think this way..

  47. Wow...Incredible says:

Ummmm…some villages are missing their idiots. Don’t you think? WOW.

  48. Nah says:

I was expecting somenthing like: Japanese people are always drowning attention to themeselves.

  49. anterierlishasgodcomplex says:

You know, morons, a wide margin of the people who made militial decisions in World War II are now deceased and I doubt any of you were even alive back then to be directly affected by those choices and consequent actions, soooooooooo why are you holding resentment against every single Japanese civilian? And before you judge a foreign country for not assisting us in emergencies, why don’t you investigate a little. Besides, there are economics, politics, and finances involved in helping nations in crisis. It’s not like lending a cup of sugar.

    • anterierlishasgodcomplex says:

Note: my above comment is intended for the ignorant Facebook posters, not my fellow users of this darling website :)

  51. Blabbersgeit says:

Can we get addresses, so that way we know where to send the “Most Outstanding Waste of Human Flesh” trophies?

  52. Andrea says:

Wow! The lack of intelligence is consuming on this. People are ridiculous. None of them can even write a complete sentence or spell everything correctly. I’m taking their comments very lightly. What a bunch of inconsiderate people….

  53. Ben says:

Handled well failbook. I was surprised when some people on my own facebook expressed similar attitudes to the skinny losers above. I put it down to small mindedness and took solace that these people are never going to have any real power in the world.

  54. Damian543RB says:

Why are they bringing up history? :S It’s just pathetic how much people don’t care nowadays. And I’m guessing that these people just wanted to get ‘likes’ or attention, coz that’s what people are like on FaceBook now :/
Mfw they realise most of their tech came from Japan.

  55. IdoitFTW says:

I’d like to see a study showing the decline in civility and the rise in internet anonymity.

While these moronic people may be an unwelcome effect of having truly free speech, anything that approaches douchbagery deserves consequences.

  56. MandaPanda says:

  57. Electric Sheep says:

    F*cking pathetic people.
I mean, is it so hard to offer support for someone in need?

Land of the free… As long as you’re American.

  58. Dear everyone featured on this entry, (NOT THE COMMENTS, you guys are awesome),

Apathy and ignorance make me hate you. It is my sincere hope that something insanely bad happens to you, and that you spend the rest of your lives trying to get sympathy for the tragedy that has befallen you. And I hope that the only reactions you get, are the reactions that you have given in response to what happened in Japan. you are poor excuses for human beings, and I hope you all die in a clown-fueled car fire.

  59. blank_page says:

No wonder why the internet’s flooded with foolish comments — obviously they’re foolish people. Bringing up history? Damn, how the heck Hurricane Katrina came ouy in the conversation? It’s so sad that they chose to be the stupid ones that gets them into circulation over the next days or weeks (could be months or forever) in the world wide web.

Anyways, prayes for Japan. They need every bit of it. Let’s help in any way we can..

  60. hdpace says:

As someone from LA who was there (LA, not N.O.) when Katrina and Rita hit, I must say, I do believe we had help from other countries who could afford to help us. If we didn’t (or if they stopped helping), I don’t blame them because I don’t know if y’all saw what I saw on the news but the people who were still down there when they hit were just stupid and didn’t really accept help; therefore, I find his argument that we shouldn’t help them now because they didn’t help us then to be void.

    • hmmm says:

If I remember correctly, Canadian relief was active after Katrina while US federal and state relief agencies were bickering about who had jurisdiction or who had seniority or some such… I don’t recall the details, but I seem to recall there being a pretty clearcut case of nonsense on our (USAn) end while responders from Canada (or some other nation) basically said, “Let us know when you’re ready to help, we’re gonna go ahead and get started.” And I think then there was a fuss about their authorizations being suddenly revoked or modified or something…

  61. Marrakesh says:

“Chris Stackz” – A$$hole alert all right…. it’s nice to know you announce your own arrival sometimes (hehe). I don’t know anyone in Japan myself, but were these people not born with any compassion?? Are some people so wrapped up in their own sad lives they refuse to even acknowledge a fellow human being’s suffering??

Still, it’s really good to know that not everyone from the USA is ignorant, narrow-minded and insensitive. Seeing some of the intelligent and thoughtful comments above has restored my faith in humanity.

  62. rawr says:

Wow! Chris Stackz – public page.
    Let’s all message him!

Aaannnddd, I’m pretty sure he’s cross eyed.

  65. Yami says:

“But that’s what happens when you bomb Pearl Harbor”
    Oh to argue like that…
Forgot, you bombed Nagasaki and Hiroshima with nuclear bombs? So tell me what’s worse?
    Moron.

  66. Cocoa says:

Those idiots do not know that Japan had their revenge from pearl harbor.

  67. Marrakesh says:

This post bought tears to my eyes! You’re saying EVERYTHING I’m thinking…. I’m from Melbourne by the way, and I’m so sorry to hear you were right in the path of Cyclone Yasi. My heart goes out to you and your loved ones. Still, Aussies keep on keeping on. And you have proven that people can still show compassion even when DIRECTLY affected by a natural disaster. You, Lily, are in MY thoughts.

I’ve seen many Americans go ‘damn, these idiots are ruining it for us’ and ‘I don’t want to be lumped together with this lot’. As a Dutch citizen, I get what you’re saying, but relax. Most of us Europeans realize it’s mostly the stupid that gets exported and showcased. We love riffin’ on ya, mostly because we see ‘America’s the greatest!’ on pretty much every website’s comment section, and the distinct impression exists that the Americans who do so have never left the country, so what the hell do they know? It’s all generalizations, both way. So relax.

Also, to the dude who said ‘is this what we, the luckiest and most privilidged continent have come to?’: bwahahaha wrong. America’s a pretty good place to live (according to family over there). So is Western Europe (own experience)

  73. trollfood says:

    tl;dr

  74. Pamela says:

That first fail “so over it” or whatever it was, did make one valid point. We don’t seem to care until a tragedy happens like Haiti. Oh, I have to inquire about some comments about other countries helping us after 9/11 and Katrina… if we got all this great help, why didn’t we hear about it? We heard about OUR celebrities forking over a million or more a piece, but nothing about other countries. Yet, within hours of a tragedy the US gives billions. Our country is in so much debt it’s not even funny, so where do these billions come from is what I’d like to know. I am not saying for one second these people don’t deserve help, it really is tragic, but who is going to step up when another disaster of epic proportions hits the United States?

  75. Susie says:

Please, please don’t think this is all that America is.
I have lots of family that lives in Japan and it’s one of my favorite places on earth. They need prayer right now, just like those people who posted those statuses do.

P.S. You can’t even be sure all of these are from Americans.

  76. Zira says:

I already raged on Facebook today about the idiots calling it payback for Pearl Harbor. Recruited myself a nice lynch mob too.

My heart is aching for the Japanese though. I happened to watch the news last night and saw the live footage of the wave invading Sendai, I’m tearing up just thinking about it. I’ve lived in California, so I’ve experienced my fair share of earthquakes, and watching videos that people took and seeing how long the shaking lasted chilled me, because I’ve never experienced an earthquake lasting that long either.

    • haeckels embryos says:

There are plenty of US bases in Japan, as well (in fact I live on one). This makes it an even more pressing issue for family and loved ones back in the States, because not only are we stationed overseas for years, but there’s a significant natural disaster as well.

Anyway, just wanted to put it out there that there are many Americans, and of course other ‘foreigners’ experiencing the tragic events of Japan’s tsunami, as well.

      • Zira says:

Yeah, of course. I have an Australian friend who is going to school in Tokyo with a lot of other international students. My state also has a lot of connections to Japan; people coming here and going there to work and go to school, companies outsourced back and forth, a Tokyo University campus, etc.

  77. Epictrollisepic says:

I’m Canadian and I’m staying out of this.

  78. Uso says:

My thoughts go out to those affected by the Tohoku earthquake.

  79. Emily says:

I’m sorry that you and your family had to go through this. It is ridiculous that people think natural disasters happen for a reason… they are just that, disasters, and they are unpredictable.

Please take heart, though, that most people don’t feel the indifference these people feel. Most people have at least an ounce of empathy. When the disaster in Haiti occurred I saw homeless people putting coins in the donation bins at the supermarket. They couldn’t even afford to help and they still did their best. We are not all heartless.

  80. Ducktopus says:

How JAPAN treats animals? The US is just as bad if not worse, it just doesn’t use cute cuddly animals like dolphins. Whether you’re an obssessive vegan PETA member or a happy carnivore, treating one animal above another (speciesism) is just wrong.

    • panic says:

I do believe that post was actually idiocy, in reality they meant China (ya know the same country and all, ffs what a moron) where there are no animal cruelty laws…

    • Naria says:

You are right… the way the US treats all sorts of animals we eat is terrible as well… and I have a nagging feeling that people in America waste a lot more of the food produces by said mistreated animals than the Japanese do when it comes to whales (at least they use the whole thing!).

  83. LJSearles says:

    Sad

  84. .... says:

The Karma thing is kinda irrelevant here….A handful of countries killed millions of people from other countries, it doesn’t mean that the entire country deserves to die, though.

    • panic says:

everybody cries karma, so where’s Germany’s? It’s all so stupid, karma only applies to us individually, so a tsunami, earthquake, flood, or what have you will not happen to a country as a whole, where is Darwin when you need him damnit, all I think about any more is the movie Idiocracy and how much closer we’re getting to that…

  85. panic says:

tl should’ve read, it’s all horrible, for the Aussies, Kiwi’s, and the Japanese, all of whom are friends to us. I only hope the rest of the world understands that we as Americans do not truly feel this way, and have all of you in our hearts

  86. Mr. T says:

  88. Christopher, the one of many says:

  89. Bob the creeper. says:

I’ve seen sick jokes appearing already. It’s sick. I’ve been watching the BBC live news on it, they showed a video of a town being torn into by the tsunami, it was being filmed from some buildings roof and people where up on it watching it happen. The people were just breaking down and crying. they’ve lost it all.
The army has been into a town totally destroyed by the tsunami and found over 300 bodies.
Anyone who makes fun of this or tries to shrug it off is sick and needs help. Its’ NOT. funny.
I’ll be keeing japan and all the people affected in my thoughts and prayers, may God be with them during this difficult time.

  90. Me says:

Yes these people are showing ignorance, but one of them did have a point. Did anyone care before the earthquake? Do the people posting sympathy messages even know anything about Japan? Remember a few weeks ago when all the Egypt “experts” suddenly came out making comments even though days before they probably couldn’t locate Egypt on a globe? Whenever a crisis comes to a head, suddenly people care for a few minutes. It is kind of annoying to see hypocritical posts from people who will probably forget in a couple days.

    • tamara says:

So we should only care about people if we can answer a pop quiz on the neighbourhood/town/state/country they live in? I worry about the human race if our senses of sympathy and empathy are dying out.

    • Nej says:

I don’t get it. Did people care before the earthquake? Lol, if you are saying did people care before the earthquake about the earthquake this is an invalid argument because you cannot care about a disaster you aren’t expecting if you don’t know it’s coming. Mass clairvoyance doesn’t exist.

As for the ‘experts’ and interest in Japan and Japanese culture. Yes, I think you’ll find the Western world has always harboured a fascination with the Eastern. Where do you think Anime and Manga come from? This is just a really bizarre thing to say. These ‘experts’ are probably trained professionals in their fields, such as Japanese or Egyptian historians and culturalists. Ofc they ‘could locate it on a globe’ lol. Their expertise, however, wasn’t relevant to popular culture and mass media. When there is a crisis in that country which hits the headlines, people automatically want to know more about that place, and that’s when the ‘expert’s’ training becomes relevant.

As for forgetting, I highly doubt it. The biggest earthquake ever recorded in Japan? Hundreds dead and thousands homeless? It’s like saying that we would all forget about the Boxing Day Tsunami, or Hurricane Katrina.

      • Naria says:

Thank you Nej. I totally agree with you. I am an East Asian Studies Major specializing in Japanese Culture and Literature and I intend to carry on to graduate studies, studying Japanese mass-culture. In other words, I will soon (officially) become one of those “experts” (though I still have lots to learn and hate to call myself that…). I can also say that, in our Japanese department, there are quite a few students. In other words, a lot of people who KNOW and CARE about Japan, A LOT earthquake or not.

So thank you for you comment! :)

  91. Marie Antoinette says:

    No, seriously, get over it.

  92. Nej says:

The thing that most bothers me is the ‘when hurricane katrina hit we had to fend for ourselves, let them do the same.’ I’m sorry but the US didn’t have to ‘fend for itself’ there were MASSIVE red cross and charity drives to try to help the people trapped, hurt or homeless out there, there still are charities trying to help people pick up the pieces. Just like there was for the Boxing Day Tsunami, the Australian Floods and Fires, and many more.

I’m so glad that there are people like the Red Cross who understand that nature DOESN’T discriminate on who it attacks. It’s a pity that there are still idiots who believe their petty lives are worth more than that of hundreds on the other side of the world. Just because you don’t know them, doesn’t make their world less important.

  93. (required) says:

And it’s people like DanOfAus that make Australia/Austria(could be either) look worse for bagging out America. THAT is ignorant, self righteous and pathetic.
I’m not American, but I have nothing against them (except for Miley Cyrus)

  94. nevah says:

preaching about karma, preaching about race. these people have no sympathy and then if something happens to them, they’ll be all up in someone else’s face saying what did they do to deserve this. where are their freaking minds?

  95. Robin says:

While “fox news readers?!!? Another example of lumping everyone in one mold. I only take offense to that because I’m a fox news reader and a Christian and I don’t give “credit” to God. I give my prayers to God! We are very compassionate people and my daughters have already asked, “What can we do to help?!” We plan on being pro-active, not judgmental. God asked us to leave the judging to him because HE is the only fair judge with mercy and grace!! Unfortunately, we do realize that it’s all the nuts and morons who get the attention, so I do understand the statement, but it’s just not accurate for most.

  96. Trolololalalala says:

Pussies like them don’t know how to forgive and forget. It’s more of a wave of apathy.

  97. sweetcadi says:

  98. Violet says:

Someone should really remind these people that we owe both Japan and China an assload of money, and you know, they have provided a lot of jobs for American citizens through their Toyota plants. Not to mention the machines they’re running on, cell phones they use, and most of the old school games they played were developed in Japan. Ungrateful bastards.

  99. DW says:

This pretty much sums up how pathetic the sad man is. :’)

  106. Kris says:

I saw a huge image collage of “remember Pearl Harbor” messages from various people’s Facebook pages. I guess no one knows their history. Pearl Harbor was seventy years ago, the reigning government at the time was an imperial monarchy, and far more people died in the Hiroshima and Nagasaki attacks – the nuclear weapons – than in Pearl Harbor. It seems these people just want a reason to not want to support aid to what is one of the largest disasters the world has ever seen, and estimated to be the biggest earthquake to hit Japan in nine hundred years.

  107. I Am Disappoint says:

OMG!!!! These Twats remind me of Justin “It all happens for a reason!” Bieber! If every bad thing the Planet Earth throws at us is due to bad Karma, then I don’t think we would have a planet left to stand on!!

  108. Demidevl says:

This makes me feel physically ill. I like to try and be optimistic about humanity, but then THIS gets thrown at me. I hate being a normal, compassionate American and having this filth constantly getting associated with me. Human misery is human misery, no matter who is experiencing. It is our duty as human beings to aid one another in such times.

  109. katscratch says:

Seriously, people are seeing the news of this disaster and all they can think is ‘ha ha, they had it coming’?

    Sorry, no.

I think this is a horrible situation, a (let’s hope!) once-in-a-lifetime combination of things for which Japan was in a very unfortunate position. And yes, I’m sure it makes better headlines to snark about ‘OMGtehstupidXians/FoxNewsppl/whatever’ than to point out that the majority *aren’t* smugly pointing at Japan and laughing. Whatever….

However, when I come across comments such as those, I wonder why I bother at all. As much as I’m well aware of our own imbeciles back home, this just provokes me into believing that the US tend to produce and breed a species of human trash which is quite unique.

BTW learn some history. yes pearl harbor happened but we hit them back with too atomic bombs. So we got our revenge but it was very lowblow and dirty and i would never wish death upon someone. Think about that before you make some retarded rasict comment you ignorant f***s

  116. George Johnson says:

what you’re really saying is people that watch Fox News believe it’s God that did this (I haven’t seen that myself), but the people that watch CBS, NBC, ABC, CNN, PMSNBC, NPR, or read Newsweek, Time, NY Times or any other LIBERAL news outlet, believe it’s “karma”.

    Yeah, that’s the ticket alright……

Your bias here is BS. Just stop it already. Try to appeal to more than 20% of the American population by just not doing it.

  117. ME says:

While I think it is sad about all the things that happened in Japan, I do agree that they should be nicer to animals. Building on Godzilla’s home…

  120. Rental says:

Idiots are so cute sometimes. With their misinformed opinions, ideas and non-existent grasp on the English language.

  121. Stonerx3 says:

Has anyone actually seen Mr. Stackz page.? Guy doesn’t understand daylight’s savings time and he thinks it’s the governments way of controlling us. Keeps us from being “communists”. Guy’s an idiot. A very loud, ignorant idiot. o.e

  122. Draw2much says:

I’ve seen nasty comments on the online news articles, but I ignored it because I thought it was just trolling. It never occurred to me people might actually believe that crap. I hope these original failbookers stub their toes on really sharp objects.

*sighs* I lived in North East coast of Japan (Misawa) for 4 years, on a US military base. I still have friends over there and I was very concerned about their well being (no tsunami damage to their area, thank God).

All of us stateside military folk are heart broken… this is a country we knew and loved, even if it wasn’t our own. And to see so many of it’s people in pain causes us pain too.

This is the second time in my life that a place I loved got flattened by a natural disaster (first was Katrina). I visited Sendai, saw it’s people, ate it’s food, played in the arcades. It’s so sad to think so many of those places–and people–are gone forever. :(

  123. Kay says:

Wow. I usually come to failbook for laughs and stuff, but this level of ignorance isn’t even funny, it’s just sad. Jesus.

  124. MrCorn says:

I literally said STFU (in real words) every time after reading all of these posts. I hate people for this reason.

  125. kelly says:

i’m so ashamed of my country right now. do we americans not have any compassion? i realize that this is only a small sampling of america, but… it’s terribly depressing to see my fellow citizens saying things like this.

  126. earthling says:

    dear chris,
i do know a japanese person. my roommate is from japan and she hasn’t heard back from all of the people she left at home to come to school here.
i cant even begin to explain how horrible it is to watch someone go through that let alone be the one having to be watching her home torn apart.
it doesnt matter what country youre from, we’re all from the planet earth. isn’t that enough to feel compassion? im not saying you have to pray (some of us dont believe in that and that’s fine), just acknowledge that your fellow man could use some support.

way to show that we’re home to some of the worst people in the world.

  127. emma says:

    Sickening.

  128. Aellanna says:

Plus the fact that we aren’t the only ones going through an economic disaster. All you have to do is look at what happened to Greece and realize that no, we aren’t in the worst situation. What it comes down to is every country and every person has their own problems to deal with, but there will always be people who will put their problems aside to help those less fortunate.

  129. Sammy says:

Oh, Japan just disappeared during Hurricane Katrina, huh? It’s REALLY not hard to find out exactly what they did for the US then. It’s right on Wikipedia.

“The Japanese Foreign Ministry said that it would provide $200,000 to the American Red Cross to assist victims of Hurricane Katrina. Japan also identified needs in affected regions via the U.S. government and provided up to $300,000 in emergency supplies such as tents, blankets and power generators if they receive requests from the U.S. for such assistance. One Japanese individual, Takashi Endo, donated USD 1 million from his personal funds to Katrina relief efforts.”

I really wish people would fact-check before they run their mouths.

  130. Lamialily says:

From one Lily to another, your comment is a wonderful thing to hear in a sea of noise.

  131. Chara says:

How can they say no one helped us after 9/11? My old History teacher had this book a bunch of Elementary kids from different countries put together dedicated to the US. They drew pictures and wrote poems for us! The one I remeber was an angel comforting a small boy. I can’t remeber the title of it but it was really comforting. How can you say that they disserve (sp?) this after something that most of them weren’t even alive during!? Yes they did bomb Pearl Harbor but you can’t blame the pilots, they were only following orders, and we dropped TWO bombs on cities filled with innocent civillians. Why do we have to have such rascist idiots in this country?

  132. william says:

I now support the whalers, just because there’s an idiot out there that believes the tsunami was caused by their whaling.

  133. Wildbreeze says:

    Lulz. Idiots.
    Things that bug me:
    1. Everybody talking about not remembering Pearl Harbor, and saying the Japanese did it in a “cowardly way”… Hmmm… Let’s see… At the end of that war, we dropped two nuclear bombs, which killed, maimed, and disabled THOUSANDS of Japanese.
    2. “I bet you don’t know one Japanese person.” I do… And there are tons of Japanese people that are now Americans. Get over your bigotry, idiots, or stfu.
    3. “Help your own country, dumba**.” Hope you feel fine with other countries having that attitude when the U.S. gets hit by some natural disaster. Nobody’s gonna be helping you.

I lost faith in humanity long ago. Whatever I gained back was trampled by Twilight and Justin Bieber.

Also, major lulz at “no tollerance for ignorance”.

    • Naria says:

I like the way you think and I am in full agreement with you. I also know people in Japan and actually intend to go live there, maybe next year (though we will have to see how these plans will be working out)…

Point #1: Thank you for pointing that out!!

Also, for your point #3: other countries HAVE helped the USA in such situations as Katrina. If the US wants the help to stop, we can. I for one, would be happy to stop helping ignorant people like that.

And cheers on that point for Twilight and Justin Bieber. I agree with you fully on that point too.

  134. KeeperOfTheReaper says:

Wow… Those people are stupid. Pearl Harbour was during WWII. That was quite a long time ago.
As for Hurricane Katrina, I remember some of us Canadians going down to help. I think Canada (as well as other countries) should stop helping the U.S. seeing as they’re taking all the credit anyway. XD

  135. octop says:

good job everyone,i now hate america, since the WWII post on memebase+this,i know you arent all like that but you have way too much retarded people.

  136. ashgreen says:

I can’t wait until people realize that the shape of our eyes and the melanin in our skin has nothing to do with ANYTHING.

I’m part of just one race, the human race. If we don’t start learning to accept each other and get along, we’re going to destroy ourselves and we will die like animals.

  137. tania says:

bahahah! I’m surprised the people who said such idiotic things on facebook could even grasp the concept of computers. I find it easier to feel horrible for country who has been hit with such devastation and is not looting, raping, and killing, than a nation that does all of the above when disaster strikes. Only my opinions, and everyone is entitled to their own.

  138. stinky says:

its normal not to care in the least bit
try and understand people arent all with no point of view before the news starts with its bs ramblings about togetherness
unless you are religious its just a bunch of asians

  139. KC says:

I keep reading the words “Pearl Harbor”… But no one seems to remember Hiroshima or Nagasaki. I’d say that more than evened the score.

    • Dani says:

Exactly. Our countries are friends now. DO NOT GO TO THOSE CITIES AND EXPECT TO BE TREATED DECENTLY THOUGH. And I also hope those ppl realize that if the power plant doesn’t get help, it WILL EXPLODE, and America WILL GET RADIATION FROM THE FALLOUT >>

  140. krysti says:

What can I say, A**holes that they are, they spouting nonsense and what else can be expected when they are uneducated and haven’t even evolved from being lower than animals. Since Human BEINGS are all born with a conscience, I really feel disgusted by reading how these things speak, I call them things, because it hurts to think that human beings can behave like this…(T_T)

  141. Darqmann says:

Hmm, Ausland is anywhere but where you are. So… if Dan is and ‘Auslander’ then he is an Alien or Foriegner.

  142. Burt says:

I’m proud to be an American, but of course they’re mostly Americans…-_-
This dude brings up Obama, wtf?
Blows my mind. Their grandparents were alive when Pearl Harbor was bombed…
Anyway, this is all I hear:

    Peace.

  143. jrdn says:

i donno if this as been already said but did these kids forget about hiroshima and nagasaki?

  144. jrdn says:

disregard what i just said. it’s a few posts above. OOPS.

  145. Ahmed says:

Some people just shouldn’t have any kind of communication with the outside world

  146. Crow says:

    Idiots of the world! IGNITE!

  147. whatsaysyou says:

Those nasty and insensitive comments you mentioned in your blog show how stupid these people are on their tweets and Facebook.

  148. V123 says:

Total dumbasses indeed. Yet I have to agree with the point one person made about nobody caring about Haiti at all and everybody caring all-too much after the earthquake. This is ignorant.

  149. NotAmerican says:

    I hate Americans!
    So selfish and ignorant!!!
