How to Hack the New Facebook Layout

Last week, Facebook rolled out a new layout that shows pictures you’ve been tagged in at the top of your profile. This immediately led to some next-level fraping, but it wasn’t until French artist Alexandre Oudin busted out his cropping skills that the hack realized its full potential:

So, how can you make your profile as awesome as Alex’s? The secret is in the sizes.

The 5 smaller images should be 97 x 68 pixels each and your profile picture should be 180 x 532 pixels.

If you don’t know what a pixel is, ask a friend with Photoshop. Give them this template, and they might actually consider helping you.

Still lost? There are some apps out there that can take care of the five horizontal images, and they have a big library full of “I <3 Justin Bieber" banners for use on your enemies.

this is the complete opposite to a fail….. and win is not enough…. (:

  2. Squeaky says:

Ah. So it wasn’t just my friend who did it. I don’t feel so worried anymore. I think.

  3. Ziggy says:

i fail to see how this is a hack, but cool either way.

    • ashes424 says:

I think it’s a hack because someone else can do this to you if they tag you in pictures. I’ve already seen some really funny ways to take advantage of this xD

    • WolfieMario says:

Well, “hack” doesn’t always mean to break the security of something. As a general term, it can be messing around with something, or more specifically, as is the case here, using something in some way different from its intended purpose. “There I fixed it” and “Hacked IRL” (both failblog/cheezeburger sites) are both good examples of the different sort of things hack means.
On the topic itself, yes, this is shear win :)

      • Ziggy says:

I realize this, but you are still be using this function in the way it was intended to be used. It just so happens that you use it in a (artistically) creative manner. I guess when i think “hack” I think actually modifying something on a deeper than surface level. Not that any of this really matters.

        • Shine4Him says:

I usually term hacking as just getting around the normal or accepted way of doing things online, not necessarily malicious (in fact, some hacker communities help software companies with vulnerability checks). For example, there was a multi-website treasure hunt going on earlier this month that was supposed to take several hours to find the clues. Instead, a creative use of Google tracked them all down in 5 minutes. FB trolls would also be considered a hack in my book, and a fun one at that!

        • vaandor says:

It was intended to be used showing one big and five smaller (separate) pictures about you. They use it to show the mosaic pieces of one big picture – that can be counted as hacking, IMHO. In the positive, creative sense.

(Sure it doesn’t really matters how we call it.)

        • Chadwick McDouchington III says:

I disagree. I don’t think the layout was intended to be used in this way, and thus, it’s a hack (and a win).

  4. gibz says:

this is a win beyond all other wins.

  5. jlafay says:

fail on failbook.. this is a win!

  6. Unluck says:

Oh, this is actually very cool!

  7. izdvacb says:

Congratulations, Monsieur. You win the Internet.

  8. Really? says:

There is serious hack potential here. The “I heart beiber” thing is mild to what just went through my head. The ability to add images that will screw up someone’s image keeps me warm on these cold winter nights.

Also the Hadoken image is just awesome.

  9. ThatDarnCat says:

Heh, you could upload some interesting pictures and tag people on them.

  10. joe says:

this is about the dumbest thing… the template sucks

  11. Hannah says:

Mine hasnt update to that layout so i cant do this how do you update it???

  12. Whaler Gas says:

Yet another reason to hate the filthy, stinking French.

  13. Johnny says:

This is not a hack. Facebook allows you to do this without messing with any code. It’s a cool idea nonetheless–I just hate that n00bs use the word hack a little loosely.

    • Rhinox says:

      You fail, so hard.
Look up Hack in the dictionary, Hacking means to makes things do things they’re not intended to do. When Facebook made this system, they did not make it to be used for this. Therefor, people who use the word Hacking to describe “messing with code”, are the “n00bs” that you allegedly hate.

tl;dr: You called yourself a n00b and confessed to hating yourself.

      • bob says:

        Basically.

      • Chadwick McDouchington III says:

No. That is the intended use of a dog.

      • Johnny says:

@ Rhinox: You are so right. Hacking is doing anything it is not supposed to do. Like when I use a DVD as a drink coaster, I’m totally hacking it. I also had never realized that I hated myself! Wow! Do I feel embarrassed! Thanks for pointing out how dumb I really am because we disagree on the definition of a word. Oh wait, never mind. I just checked the dictionary. Webster’s dictionary. It says that hacking is to “gain access to a computer illegally”. Also, to chop into little pieces. Speaking of dictionaries, you should look up the word “therefor” [sic]. I think you were looking for the word “therefore”. They both exist, but have different meanings. That’s why your spelling program didn’t catch it.

        • Me says:

          Wheeeeheeheeheeee
If this was youtube, I would give you a thumbs up

        • Pnux says:

Sorry dude, but thats not the meaning of hacking; that is the meaning of security cracking. I do find it funny how you complained about people not using the term properly, but when you told it meant something else, you whined about only disagreeing on the meaning.

        • Mike says:

Agreed. Hacking has nothing to do with breaking into a computer. That’s a term the media made up. Ask a *real* hacker what hacking is and you’ll get the right answer. CRACKING is breaking into computers. Get it straight before you go on a tirade and hurt yourself.

      • Llogic says:

Trolololo :D Can you shove some physics in there to make it better?

  14. Eryn says:

i hav an old version of photoshop , but i hardly use it, how do i use that template??

  15. Damn says:

Tried it. It didn’t work. It keeps scrambling the pictures so you don’t see them in order… no matter what order I upload them in, tag them in, or what order I’ve put them in in the album. I fiddled with all of those and couldn’t get it to display them in the right order.

    • Acies says:

same here =( and also the dimensions somehow didn’t work on mine… the horizontal rows of previews were smaller than 97×68… the feed that says “[I've] just been tagged in [my] own album,” however, was the correct size… but it appears too low + I’d have to find a whole new picture to make it look nice.. so i gave up =(

    • Bean says:

You have to tag them backwards. It took a few tries, but it worked. Now I’m going a little crazy doing things to my friends’ profiles.

  16. Hannah says:

how do you do the big picture down the side :O

  17. Pnux says:

Oh god, i have the perfect idea for this. Unfortunately, my The GIMP keeps crashing and i wont be able to do it until tomorrow. I hope nobody steals my idea!

    • z says:

I hate when my gimp crashes.

You should have let me die in the war, Forest!

    • Just Me says:

Have you tried an older version of Gimp?? I tried a newer one, had crashing issues and switched back to my older one which is 2.2 – it’s perfect and the one I was used to already. 2.4 and above, everything is moved all over the place, drives me crazy.

      • Pnux says:

Im using 2.6.8, and ive been using the most recents versions only. But it doesnt really matter, my days in this faildows operating system are counted.

        • Shine4Him says:

I wonder if Paint.NET uses the same format?? I didn’t get around to trying Gimp because of all the crashes I kept hearing about.

          • B says:

Paint.NET doesnt use the photoshop template, I tried :)
I made my own template after about an hour of messing around with it. If your interested in the link just reply.

  18. z says:

I also have to say, the artist thing for setting up a distributed self-portrait is somewhat clever, but for some reason I’m not that impressed? I mean, it seems like a pretty logical thing to do- if you’re into that sort of thing?

  19. Lt. Sarcasm says:

I’m going to have to play with this.

  20. noname says:

okayyyyyy probably something simple i did wrong butttt…
my profile isn’t showing up as the new layout. normally I’d be like “oh sweet!” but now I wanna do this but i guess i cant? i checked my profile view on two or my friends accounts and my profile seems to be the only one that doesn’t have the new layout? sup with THAT?

  21. Yaro says:

I could be thinking about this wrong, but couldnt someone spend hours getting the images just right, and then 2 seconds later someone tages you in a pic and messes it up? Do you have to detag yourself for life to keep it?

    • Acies says:

if you scroll over your preview pictures, there should be a little x in the corner. if you click on that, then the picture will cease being on your profile, but still be in the album…

  22. i'm gay says:

this isn’t a hack for all those that haven’t realized.
    Still looks nice

    • Wildbreeze says:

For all of those (like you) who haven’t read the eleventy thousand explanations, a hack is using a program in a way that it was not intended to be used. Did Facebook intend this to happen? Probably not. Therefore, it IS a hack.

      • 133h4x0r says:

Hack? FB made it that way.. when they coded the new layout it was meant to show the pictures that way.. so unless you actually change any code on the server or client, it is not hacked.

The intentions are up to us.. Like if you kill someone with a nailgun you don’t have to “hack” it in order to murder a victim.. It is just there and we use it as we like. Since you are not re-programming anything, its not hacking.

wanna hack? alt+F4 for a full tutorial on how to hack facebook.

        • ste says:

Wiktionary– Hacking: Unauthorized attempts to bypass the security mechanisms of an information system or network.
This is soooo not a hack. It’s just a way of doing things that will get very boring in a week’s time.

  23. Caribou says:

    I love you.

  24. MeTheOnlyMe says:

    Haha this is great :3

  25. Unicorn Leader says:

I’ve put mine only so the five smaller images say “I LOVE UNICORNS” :L

  26. paristocrat says:

Great idea but Failbook is pretty lame for stealing Mashable articles and posting them as their own a day later….eventually plagiarism is going to catch up with you!!!

  27. MsBuzz says:

    Wow This is amazing.

  28. Felipe says:

    Facebook becoming MySpace in 5… 4… 3…

  29. Edi says:

I did this to one of my friends’ profiles, as well as my own. She was very excited when she saw it.

  30. jessica says:

    i’m impressed

  31. Phineas says:

Ferb, I know what we’re going to do today.

  32. shoe says:

    I’m non-plussed.

  33. 1 says:

The template is not a template.

  34. Shirley says:

Forget about the template – I just used a screenshot as a guide and made it in Keynote (like Powerpoint.) Looks fab!!

  35. okay, if I can do this in MS paint, you can do it in photoshop.

  36. looks like a win to me

  37. Zekiran says:

Sucks that the link is just photoshop formatted. If they had it in a basic bitmap or something else I’d be able to open it. Remember kids: not EVERYONE uses, likes or owns Photoshop. Some of us use paint shop pro, gimp, or another of the many programs out there, and not all of them are capable of opening psd format. :(

  38. C. Hughes says:

Ha ha I can’t figure it out, and I have photoshop! How lame am I?!

  39. Ellie says:

Mkay, took a while. The original linked template was very faulty for me. >.< Anyways, still "new" to GIMP so I didn't make a template, but I made a simple image guide for anyone who wants it.
Basically would say it's an intermediate-user guide, since you'll have to make your own guide lines.

  40. Waka Waka says:

someone pleaseeeee help me how to do this!!!! =(

  41. mismatchedsocksx says:

the dimensions of the default pic are right but not the dimensions of the tagged photos. The images viewed are zoomed in a bit to where you’re tagged. All I did was copy the preview of the image and compare it to the size of the original image in photoshop then align my own photos to it. it took me about an hour or so to get everything completed.
I decided to go for a holiday theme:
    Happy holidays!
    heres mine :]

  42. Alison says:

I used to use gimp but I like Photoscape better, another free bee. Took me a while of messing around but I figured this out. My profile is so cute now.

  43. Ben says:

I was not worried about this, now I am. Thanks

  44. I’m an artist, and had a painting that worked well in this format. Thanks for the idea! Here’s mine: http://blog.frenchtoastgirl.com/2010/12/having-fun-with-facebooks-new-settings.html

  45. Sneaky says:

How did I accidently stumble into nerd-ville?!?!

  46. Wolf says:

GOOD IDEA. I’ll try that next. Here’s my Spirited Away one:

  50. Miwenskee says:

I tried using the template but without any success. So i started from scratch – i print-screened a profile and measured the dimensions of the profile pic and the tagged ones and made a proxy which i copy-pasted onto a pic of mine and the rest was just cropping. So for those who say the dimensions are wrong – they aren’t wrong, they’re precise. For me the only issue was the basic info over the tagged photos. The proxy i made will work only if the basic info consists of two lines.
    Anyway, here’s mine :) http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j309/Miyenski/preview.jpg?t=1292765790

  51. Zach says:

There’s a pretty good set of PNG templates on my app. Hopefully that’s easier to work with than a PSD. I wanted to use PNG so it’s transparent.

BTW, Miwenskee, yours in awesome. Well done.

  52. Ephram says:

How do you make a camera take a picture in the desired pixels, so that I dont have to screw up the proportions?

  53. J says:

I love the idea of being able to do this, but when I put up my 5 pictures and tagged someone in them, they didn’t show up in the right order! And no, I don’t mean backwards. They were all scrambled, so I figured out what order they were in and uploaded my pics again in that order, and now they’re scrambled in a different order! Do I have to just keep posting and removing until they show up in the right order or something?

  54. Nag_Twice says:

    Epic win!

  55. Lai Wee Kiat says:

Hey! I got something similiar! This one takes a lot more effort. Hahaha.

Doesnt match the profile picture, but i prefer it that way. Most of the cases i’ve seen, the image makes no sense when they comment on stuff.

  59. krys says:

I tried and failed hahah :D

  60. Meggles~ says:

    Humm.. I’m not sure if this was mentioned… but… Use this… http://apps.facebook.com/profile-banner/

  62. :O says:

I tried the template, works well, but had to edit my picture a little before it turned out well by moving it up just a tad

  63. jen says:

if I sent someone a pic, would you help me out?

  64. dumb says:

    NOT A HACK!

  65. -L- says:

Here is mine. The picture isn’t that good; but I’m not very photogenic.

    http://img811.imageshack.us/i/newprofile.jpg/

I almost missed editing out my phone number; that would have probably ended poorly… lol

  66. Val says:

Erm… I made a banner, and it seems like the only person that can see the fkn thing is me!! When I do a preview my profile in my privacy options, none of my friends can see the way cool banner that I’ve created… and forget about trying to make your own by hand, cuz they won’t go in the right order! I hate facebook right now! grrr

    • MechaMew2 says:

Did you readjust your privacy options? You should allow your photos to be seen by friends, if not friends of friends. Also, you have to tag them backwards. Start your tags with the rightmost photo.

  67. Cynthia says:

    Just made mine; nerdy enough?
    http://i51.tinypic.com/2qxayax.jpg

    • -L- says:

Just one bit of friendly advice. When you block out your name for privacy, block out ‘xxxxxx changed her profile picture’.
Also cropping out you tool bar is another key step. It also uses the name you gave FB. Not the mention the tabs that, again, list your name.
Not that anyone will try to use this info to steal your identity…

Now, I need to be going. Also, if you notice any anomalies on your next bank statement, don’t mind them. ;D

  68. Failore says:

why is it not working for me, it’s almost perfect, yet when i upload and tag it to facebook, it puts the 5 smaller pictures in the wrong order! FAILBOOK!

    • ste says:

then tag them in the reverse order 8-)

      • Affinity says:

^ this is the right way to do it. I just did myself and it worked beautifully. You might have to get rid of a bunch of other ones by clicking the little X first in the top right corner of each. Then simply tag them from last to first. If you screw up just remove the tags from all and then re do it.

As for people talking about messing with your profile by tagging you wrongly – it might be a funny joke for a bit. But remember FB notifies you when you’ve been tagged. Simply remove the tags from the unwanted pics to restore things. =)

  69. anonymous says:

heres mine. not that great, meh!
