He kind of asked for it though… no offence to his fans. Stingrays are awesome, I fed one once. It was because of Steve’s carelessness that he died, but I feel sorry for his kids and wife.
Yes, Americans knew about Steve Irwin AND his death. Many people were very sad about it. This is just one stupid person and you can’t even tell if they’re American.
I’m not sure that being unaware of celebrities qualifies as being stupid. Maybe they just had better things to do than watch tv.

Uhm… yah. Contrary to popular belief, Steve Irwin was VERY well known in the US. Both in life and in death. Learns 2 intarwebs. You are entirely incorrect about what Americans do and do not know. Things the average American knows:
- Anything on US Cable TV (which is getting more expansive daily)
- The state of their own economy, sort of
- Basic literacy and grammar skills
- One or more genres of music, over a 10 year span
- A bunch of celebrity trivia, primarily of US celebrities or foreign imports.
Things that typical Americans don’t know:
- Geography. Especially world Geography. It’s pretty bad out here.
- Languages. Unless born into a bilingual household or quite affluent, most Americans speak at most one language.
- International politics/diplomacy. If they’re not attacking us, we’re not interested in hearing about it.
- Religion. Even a large percentage of devoutly religious people in the US seem to have not even read through their respective religious texts.
So to recap, a crazy Aussie import on cable TV with his own show? CLEARLY well known (celeb, TV). The president of Iraq, a country the US is working to stabilize? Nawww (foreign, not attacking us, speaks another language anyways).
Which is not to hate on the US, I’m from the US, and having traveled enough- I can tell you that each nation is having some pros and cons on being informed about things. But among all nations, the US has to be close to the bottom in knowledge of important world affairs. (But we are REMARKABLY well informed about the divorce of Mel Gibson. Can barely avoid it on the TV!)
Also, I have to disagree with the “Basic literacy and grammar skills”. Have you been to the internet lately? It’s not just Americans but damn, it seems like no one knows how to write in English anymore.
