Yah, as a lifelong “nice guy” I can say that the “nice guy” thing to do was not to publicly embarrass everyone by posting whiny messages on a public forum to win her over.
I went through a period in high school were literally every girl I liked strongly and wanted to ask out fell in love with some other dude the week before I planned to ask them out. And you know what I did? Bit my tongue and became a good friend instead, while accepting and supporting that they liked someone else more than they liked me.
And, having done this, after those relationships ended, I had the option to make a go at it if I was still interested and single. (And in most cases one or both was not true).
So yah, the nice-guy thing is to accept that women have emotions and free will and may not reciprocate your love. Not to cause awkwardness in their relationship and give them bad feelings when there’s nothing they can do about it. (I mean seriously, have you ever met ANYONE who could make decisions about who they fell for? It is what it is.)

The thing is, there are nice guys – genuinely kind, sweet, lovely men. They will find happiness with someone who appreciates them.
Then there are “Nice Guys”…. Guys who have decided that since they’re not particularly confident, talented, funny, athletic, good-looking or whatever, they can make up for that by being doormats to girls they have decided to worship. And that doing things for these girls, or being friends with them in the hope of getting into their pants (instead of because they actually value the girl as a friend), or in general Being Nice ™ — they’ve decided that this behaviour EARNS them the right to have a girlfriend. And not, mind you, any girlfriend; but the specific one upon whom they have fixated.

Eh. Having been in the Megan position myself, it doesn’t mean she’s a slut, or not worth respect. In fact, it’s a bit sexist to assume that because she chose one person over another that she is promiscuous. If anything, it would point otherwise. She may be very well worth respect and commitment, and may in fact, be getting that from Spencer. Just because a girl chooses one male over another is not enough to say she’s not worth respect and commitment.

I mean, we’re all victim to that line of thought at one point or another. You get turned down and maybe think “God, I am so much better for her than this dude- she should date me instead.” With that said, if you actually love someone that much you should respect them enough to follow their own hearts. If you think they really WOULD like you more, maybe then it makes sense to declare stuff like he said- but in private. Otherwise you’re basically saying: “Your emotions don’t matter, I like you so you should like me.” Which is a pretty self-centered kind of love.
You have to admit though, for Chris to love Megan as much as he does or says he loves her as much as he does isn’t something that a lot of guys would say to their girlfriends/love interests nowadays, and I think it’s really nice that he feels this way about her. There’s a big difference between a painful, hormone driven crush that makes you feel stupid things and act stupid ways and an actual psychopath that has no grip on reality. I have been in this situation myself 2 times but I never posted it on Facebook, I went up to the girl and told her how I felt and then she gave me the response of “Thats sweet but I have a BF” (btw the bf in both of the cases were physically abusive to the girl. just making mention of that) So I moved on with my life and did find someone who loves me just as much as I love her.
Then, you haven’t exactly been in this situation then. The extra element needed is that the girl had her boyfriend right there, and you were pleading so much you were blowing bubbles with the snot draining out your nose.

I used to make Chris’s mistake. You could be the perfect guy, better in every way than her boyfriend, and it still cannot magically create attraction. Love doesn’t go to the one that deserves it most–it’s not a contest of worthiness. It’s an emotion, she has it or she doesn’t, and the most insensitive thing about Chris’s behavior is that it appears to him that her feelings don’t matter, only his own.

Chris reminds me of someone who stalked me in high school. He whined like this all the time and made me feel really guilty, like it was my fault that he felt that way. But it was not my fault, and I should have gotten help instead of taking the blame and trying to deal with him by myself. If that’s the case, Megan, it’s not your fault or your responsibility.

I’ve been in Chris’ situation…
Found the courage to ask her in private, was rejected, tried friendship cause I really worshipped that girl. That situation was fine for her, and she was a great friend, but it didn’t really work out for me (as anyone could have expected but, oh well, hormones) despite attempts to date others.
I almost suffered psychological breakdowns a few times. It was one of the worst periods of my life. But I still had the decency to not pull a Chris. You pathetic excuse for a man.
If she won’t be with you just screw up her life. Here is what you do. Talk to her in person. Don’t be sad just look somewhat forlorn and a little confused. As long as you didn’t do something incredibly stupid with her before she will fall for it. Then hit it and drop it. Rub it in Spencer’s face and forget about Megan. Dirty, but effective.

Does anyone else feel the temptation to look Chris up and tell him, in the nicest way possible, that he’s being an idiot or is it just me? Maybe it’s because I never had any little brothers or sisters (I’m the youngest of four and the only girl) so I want so badly to give something to the younger generation that will make them better adults.

Strong feelings can cause you to make unwise decisions. I think in this case everyone acted in their own best interest, and that’s the best one can expect. Maybe Chris has very strong feelings. He obviously feels desperate enough to do something like this, so why kick the guy when he’s down? After all how many romantic comedies enforce the idea that you have to give up all dignity and go for what you want, and then eventually she will break up with Mr. Perfect to marry your weird self? Even without the romcoms I think strong emotions would still drive people to do something like this. So Chris is justified in doing all he can to get, what may be, the love of his life. Spencer is also justified in defending his own position as boyfriend. Please, if you ever end up in this situation, don’t judge people in the way that all the reviewers here have.
