Actually we are held in place by a wonderful thing called gravity……A big bang somehow creating the physics involved in our earth going round a massive nuclear reaction that supplies us with heat without killing us? The chance of that is as much as you’d get when you divide my zero…..
Although you should have said something more along the lines of, what do you mean your zero?
Or that is undefined.
When you divide by smaller and smaller numbers, the answer approaches infinity, but when you are dividing by zero itself, an infinite number of zeros still gives you a zero.
TiMusician just failed at using a popular internet phrase to debunk a fairly sound Physical model.
It certainly sounds better to me than “Something just made it”.
Wouldnt dividing by zero give you infinity? seeing as u could take 0 an infinite amount of times from any number. but sinnce zero has a value of zero, its zero. so 0 = infinity?
the earth is not held in place by its own gravity.
The earth is kept from falling into the sun by a phenomena called orbit, but is not stationary in any sense of the word as it must revolve around the sun to maintain orbit. The sun must revolve around the Milkyway’s galactic center to keep it from falling into the galactic center
The Milkyway must orbit around the center of rotation of the local cluster to stop it from fusing with other galaxies.
The local cluster does not orbit any known object, but rather is currently being hurled through space by forces introduced to its matter when the Big Bank happened.
Actually we are not “held” in place at all. The universe is a system of bodies with their respective masses that interact through gravity and thus affecting each other’s trajectories, so that for example the Earth is kept in an orbit around the Sun. The sun however is orbiting around the very massive centre of our galaxy – The Milky Way. Our galaxy itself may be orbiting around something far greater in mass but even that incredibly massive body(or system of bodies) is not sitting still in space. It is too moving but we have nothing that we know that is standing still to compare it to to decide at what speed. For all we know we might actually be moving a million times faster than light and not know it. So actually if you like you could say we are falling infinitely under the force of gravity and possibly with inertia from the Big Bang itself.
P.SRelax we won’t collide with the Sun because we are “falling” under it’s gravity in an orbit aroud it. And we won’t “fall to the ground” because smply there isn’t any. But we are certainly moving very very quickly.)
Acually I’d like to correct myself. What I stated is an approximation of what is really going on. Any celestial body isn’t really orbiting another body but rather the mass centre of all the bodies that pull it with their gravity. I will claryfy this with an example. Imagine in the whole universe there were just two exactly identical planets with nothing else interacting with them in any way. They will both attract each other equally and as a result will start orbiting around the one point exactly in the centre between them (the centre of the segment between their respective mass centres) which will be the mass centre of the system of those two planets. Now if one of the planets had a greater mass the mass centre would be closer to it on that segment. So if we were to consider the Sun and our Earth igrnoring the rest of the planets they would both be orbiting around their mass centre which would be very close to the Sun’s own mass centre (because the Earth’s mass is greatly less than the Sun’s) but not exactly it. When we now consider the rest of the bodies in the universe we might hastily arrive at the conclusion that all the planets are orbiting in ellipses around their mass centre of the universe. This however is not true since we would be forgetting every body pulls every other body seperately and since gravity depends on distance. Thus we should deduce that bodies close to eachother (approximately)orbit the mass centre of the system they make. That systems approximately act as a single body in a system of greater distances between it’s elements(bodies or other systems) and those elements themselves (approximately)orbit around the mass centre of that greater system. You can repeat that step assuming this system were an element of a greater system. So as a cause of gravity alone a celestial body in our universe is (approximately)going on a trajectory of ellipses around certain points that themselves move in ellipses around other points (and so on). I used “(approximately)” all over the place because I neglected some interactions that distort those ellipses. One such interaction is of a body very far away so we excluded it from a lesser system. Another interaction is actually between the bodies of a system that is actually an unsolved problem in science. It is called the three body problem and if you are interested here’s a link where it is explained better than I could: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Euler%27s_three-body_problem
I don’t know, man, space is a mindf**k when you think about it. Yeah, inertia and all that keeps us circling around the sun, but really, given how unpredictable it is, what’s to stop something from changing one day? And causing us to just hurtle out someplace?
Except that inertia isn’t what keeps us circling around the sun…
That’s gravity. The only reason we don’t go directly into the sun is because the sun is not the only thing that is pulling on us. We are in a constant fall with the sun.
That is what an orbit is. Not inertia, but a constant fall.
Been a while since highschool, man. Well, even if I was still in it, it would still just be the best education LAUSD can provide, which means you’re the intellectual equivalent of day-old splooge on the stomach of the sex victim trying to repress it all, but I digress.
You can’t really fall in space, though, as there’s no “up”. Is there? Does the universe have a ceiling?
No, the universe doesn’t have a ceiling (that we can see or clearly define), nor an up or down, but what truth was saying is that the earth is falling into the sun, not up or down, and the speed we generate from the gravity keeps us from going straight into it, think about a basketball continuously spinning around the rim, neither spinning out of it, or falling in.
Our universe obeys a set of rules at all times that we are able to observe it. If it were to “change one day” we likely wouldn’t notice. Odds are, your theory is happening every moment, we simply can’t exist at the same time.
This will probably not make sense, and that is because we are human.
This isn’t really much idiotic- if it was, then thinking of why apples fall down and not up would have been idiotic too. But of course, thanks to Newton thinking of that, we have the law of gravity.
Sure, the gravity of the sun keeps the earth on orbit- but what’s balancing the vertical position?
Think of it.
It’s all a balance of gravity and centipetal force that keeps everything in orbit. Not sure what keeps the panet at the same angle, though. Maybe it’s because there are no forces that would change that?
that’s exactly what it is. there is only one force affecting the earch and thats the suns gravity. there is no force slowing it down and there is no force pushing it “up” or “down”, so it remains at the angle at which it is
wrong. the law of gravity says that everything pulls on everything else. It’s just that stronger gravity dwarfs weaker gravity and we don’t notice it. The moon pulls on the earth all the time. Tides.
Not every planet has the same orbit or angle. Check out Pluto. Though it lost its status as the 9th planet, its orbit is pretty interesting. That the orbit of earth is somewhat balanced is thanks to the fact that it is relatively far away from such giant planets like Jupiter or Saturn. Place the Earth in between this two and it´s gone for good. Astronomy is a pretty interesting field. What makes this a fail is the fact that he got so many things wrong that are taught in school and which I knew since I was 14 years old.
I’m pretty sure he was joking fellas, usually whenever I finish a sentence filled with sarcasm, I put a little =D or XD in there to show I’m not being serious…
Not to endorse one worldview over another, but the answer ‘God’ does answer a question that physics has yet to answer: why are the laws of physics regular laws? I.e., what accounts for the predictable and mathematical nature of, say, gravity? Tabula rasa, chaos has as much theoretical viability as predictability. That issue was one of the key questions that caused many of the early Enlightenment scientists to remain theists.
Alternatively, you could say the ‘laws’ will stay the same if there’s no god to bugger about with them. But it’s not strictly true to say that phenomena obey laws: the ‘laws’ are systems we humans use to analyse and describe phenomena, so it’s more true to say that the laws obey the phenomena.
Yes, you could say that ‘”laws” will stay the same if there’s no god to bugger about with them’, but there’s no reason for why that should be so. For one could say, with as much vigour, that ‘the universe’s behavior will be entirely chaotic if there’s no god to bring about order’. The latter axiom is at least as facially viable as the other.
And you are absolutely correct: ‘laws’ are simply human descriptors for what we observe to be consistent behavior.
I’ve never taken a physics class. However, it’s my understanding that the universe is moving to a state of greater chaos every moment. There is only one way for the universe to be “organized” thus it is a system of high entropy. Forgive my simplistic explanation, but the universe started out at a point of great order (singularity?) and since the “big bang” has only become more and more disorganized. It’s like an egg that falls on the floor. There is only one way for all those molecules to fit to be that egg and many ways for it to be broken. For this reason, the egg can easily become more and more disordered but cannot be put back together again.
If there is a God and if that God is trying to create order, s/he has been steadily faltering for billions of years.
The fact is, is that we can only observe a minute portion of the universe, and while what we observe is uniform, there is still the other 99.9999999% of the universe to explore. Basing the uniformity of the entire universe on the observation that an infinitely minute portion of it is uniform would be absurd. Thus, saying that God must be the one maintaining uniformity in the universe falls far short of anything close to a serious theory.
A Deist view (God as watchmaker) there would easily conform to your model. In fact, most theistic religions have some account for the disorder, as well as the order (e.g., sin).
Remember that a criticism of a religious tradition has to take into account the whole system. Just as a criticism of science must take into account the whole system. E.g., you can’t criticize modern physics on the basis that gravity doesn’t explain why two pieces of metal attract each other so strongly, since there is a distinct theory for explaining electromagnetism. A coherent criticism must understand and address that reality.
All the planets are on same plane because they formed from the extra gases that were left spinning outward in a disc after our local star was created. Pluto has a weird orbit because it’s not a planet, rather an Kuiper belt object that was massive enough to collapse on itself making it spherical.
No he means centRipetal, there is no centrifugal force. The centrifugal force was made up, because most people don’t seem to grasp centripetal forces. You fail.
Centripetal force describes how a force acts, not what it is; the same goes for centrifugal. The forces themselves could be gravity, inertia, rocket propulsion, somebody throwing an object, etc. If one’s made up, then they both are…it’s just a term coined specifically for rotational motion. In the case of Earth, the centripetal force would be gravity; the centrifugal would be Earth’s inertia.
While they’re often confused, there IS both a centrifugal and centripetal force. centrifugal force is by no means made up. It’s where the name came from for the device the “centrifuge”.
Centripetal force is the force acting inwardly on the planets, from the sun, to keep them in a circular orbit. That, along with their velocity, keeps them in a constant circular path and is why they don’t either fly outwards or spiral inwards. Centrifugal force is what makes you feel like you’re being pushed to one side in a car when you take a sharp turn.
Why do you assume that they stay on the same vertical position? In fact they don’t, because their orbits are inclined with respect to each other. However, neglecting that there is still no reason to assume that the entire solar system stays in the same vertical position. There may as well be a giant mass that attracts the entire solar system towards it (astronomers tell me there is), but it is so far away that it can be assumed to exert its gravitational force in the same direction on all planets.
do you mean why don’t the planets fall down? it’s because there is no down in outer space. when something falls down, it’s because there’s a planet underneath. But in space, there’s no ground, only big things like the sun that we like to orbit around.
Nothing is “balancing” it. OHMYGAWD. Plus you cant determine whether its moving. You’d have to have a point of reference. And who are you to say that this point of reference is right? This reference point is probably moving in reference to something else. And what makes things “fall”? gravity. There is no one great source of gravity below all the planets and galaxies. Wed be zooming into a black hole. Everything pulls on everything, and it’s pretty well balanced. BOOM.
Nah it’s idiotic. Of course when Newton thought why apples fall, he had to figure it out himself.
Think of the pythagorean theorem. a^2 + b^2 = c^2. Pythagoras was a genius for coming up with it. But in today’s world, if a highschool graduate doesn’t know that, yeah they’re idiots
To answer your question about planets not falling vertically:
Objects on Earth “fall” because there is gravity (“put in motion” is a better word than “fall” when talking physics).
In space, there is no gravity per se. Gravity comes from the stars (like the sun) and planets. The gravity of an object A pulls other objects towards object A.
The only gravity really affecting the Earth (and the other planets of our solar system) is the Sun’s gravity. Therefore, planets move only in a circle around the sun.
(Planets also generate gravity, but I’m skipping this part because it’s not very relevant and could confuse those unfamiliar with astronomy and physics)
So, basic answer: objects in space do not move in any direction without gravity. Objects “fall” because of the presence of gravity).
Note also that different objects have stronger/weaker gravity. Distance also weakens the force of gravity.
we have a huge molten core or iron (amongst other things) and the rotation of the Earth creates massive magnetic forces that act in opposite of the suns Gravity, also the sun has opposing gravitational forces that not only draw things into its orbit but also creates a buffer around itself
Gravitation, or gravity, is one of the four fundamental interactions of nature, along with strong interaction, electromagnetic force and weak interaction. It is the means by which objects with mass attract one another.[1] In everyday life, gravitation is most familiar as the agent that lends weight to objects with mass and causes them to fall to the ground when dropped. Gravitation causes dispersed matter to coalesce, thus accounting for the existence of the Earth, the Sun, and most of the macroscopic objects in the universe. It is responsible for keeping the Earth and the other planets in their orbits around the Sun; for keeping the Moon in its orbit around the Earth; for the formation of tides; for convection, by which fluid flow occurs under the influence of a density gradient and gravity; for heating the interiors of forming stars and planets to very high temperatures; and for various other phenomena observed on Earth
The Interplanetary Magnetic Field (IMF) is the term for the Sun’s magnetic field carried by the solar wind among the planets of the Solar System.
The heliospheric current sheet is a three-dimensional form of a Parker spiral that results from the influence of the Sun’s rotating magnetic field on the plasma in the interplanetary medium.[1]Since the solar wind is a plasma, it has the characteristics of a plasma, rather than a simple gas. For example, it is highly electrically conductive so that magnetic field lines from the Sun are carried along with the wind. The dynamic pressure of the wind dominates over the magnetic pressure through most of the solar system (or heliosphere), so that the magnetic field is pulled into an Archimedean spiral pattern (the Parker spiral) by the combination of the outward motion and the Sun’s rotation. Depending on the hemisphere and phase of the solar cycle, the magnetic field spirals inward or outward; the magnetic field follows the same shape of spiral in the northern and southern parts of the heliosphere, but with opposite field direction. These two magnetic domains are separated by a two current sheet (an electric current that is confined to a curved plane). This heliospheric current sheet has a similar shape to a twirled ballerina skirt, and changes in shape through the solar cycle as the Sun’s magnetic field reverses about every 11 years.
The plasma in the interplanetary medium is also responsible for the strength of the Sun’s magnetic field at the orbit of the Earth being over 100 times greater than originally anticipated. If space were a vacuum, then the Sun’s 10-4 tesla magnetic dipole field would reduce with the cube of the distance to about 10-11 tesla. But satellite observations show that it is about 100 times greater at around 10-9 tesla. Magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) theory predicts that the motion of a conducting fluid (e.g. the interplanetary medium) in a magnetic field, induces electric currents which in turn generates magnetic fields, and in this respect it behaves like a MHD dynamo.
actually the opposing forces of earths magnetic forces and and the forces of the sun interact hugely. if you read the second article the push pull of the suns magnetic fields are the reasons we stay in orbit versus be sucked into or closer to the sun. I learned this at a lecture put on by steven hawkins like 3 weeks ago. I am going with him on this…sorry…you fail
21.Earth’s Orbit
Since the Earth is constantly moving towards and away from the Sun, are there particular dates – that are constant each year – that the Earth is exactly 1 AU away from the Sun? If so, what are they? If not, what’s the approximate cycle for the Earth to reach this point? Every 6 months?
The Earth’s orbit varies from 0.983 AU out to 1.067 AU. We are actually closer to the Sun in the winter than in the summer. The orbit crosses the 1 AU point two times a year – in spring and fall.
“creates a buffer around itself”? That sounds fairly unsubstantiated, especially since gravity is a purely attractive force and stray asteroids/comets get swallowed by the sun all the time. Perhaps you could clarify what you mean by that. Also I read your beat-down of John and all of that is completely irrelevant; there’s nothing there that suggests magnetic forces oppose the Sun’s gravity. In fact as has already been said somewhere else in these comments the Earth stays in orbit because it has angular momentum conserved from its creation from the proto-planetary disc left over from the Sun’s own creation.
its opposing forces of magnetism WITHIN the sun AND the magnetic forces of the Earth. The suns GRAVITY “changes” how it affects the Earth 2 times a year and every 11 years. The suns gravity shift alters the EARTHs orbit (see in figure above) like second paragraph to roughly .80 and 1.05 of the standard ! AU away from the sun. With the shift in gravity the Earth draws closer to the sun but with the suns and earth opossing magnetic forces the earth is not pulled into the sun or any closer then the .80AUs. The other magnetic force of the sun, the one that is pulling us closer keeps us in orbit verses taking a similiar path to say a comet…which has gravity but not significant magnetic force.
and further note. i am not saying that gravity affects magnetism i am saying that gravity and magnetism affect the earths orbit…although according to string and brane theorm there would be effects on each other but it is not relevant to this discussion
Ok, maybe I’m missing your point, but you’re just describing elliptical orbits, and elliptical orbits are perfectly viable without throwing in any magnetic forces. Put simply, on the way in towards the sun gravity accelerates Earth in the direction of motion, i.e. speeds it up, and on the way out the opposite occurs and it slows down. This change in velocity results in an orbit that is at some points closer and at other points further away from the Sun. This is easiest to visualise thinking of the highly eccentric orbit of a comet, but holds true for the far less eccentric orbit of Earth.
It occurs to me I might not have explained very well, so here’s a link to a Wikipedia page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elliptical_orbit
Perhaps what you’ve misinterpreted is the fact that the Sun does strongly perturb the Earth’s magnetic field, so that the Earth’s magnetosphere is shortened in front of the Earth and elongated behind it?
In any case only moving charged particles experience a force under a magnetic field (hence the need for molten metal cores to create magnetic fields around planets- look up “Dynamo Theory”). As I’m (fairly) sure the Earth doesn’t have a net charge, I don’t understand why it would experience a force, attractive or repulsive, from the Sun’s magnetic field.
A final point: Mars has no magnetic field, and Venus only a very small one relative to Earth , yet their orbits are comparable to Earth’s. If magnetism was responsible for variations in orbit, how do you explain this?
It wouldn’t be idiotic if the answers to his question weren’t already readily available and really well known. It wasn’t idiotic when Newton thought about it because no one had before.
we are in a vertical position, it depends on the position and angle of your point of reference. e.g. if you were laying down sideways, the wall would appear to be the ceiling and vice versa.
Dear arahman32 and Matthew y’all are almost as retarded as the Facebook post. Go look up centripetal force, angular momentum, Newton’s Laws, precession, and basically anything on our solar system. After that you MAY have some room to talk about how our universe works. Until then, just don’t talk.
Guys what up with these comments? Anyway if you really want to know: the “vertical” position ( we’ll just admit that the vertical has already been defined) is constant because the earth would of course move in the plan defined by its inital speed vector and the only force that is applied to the earth: gravitation due to the sun’s mass (98% of the solar systems mass btw)
ppl nowdayz haz no logic? Droping down is a wrong therm anyways, its more like the planet is a big “magnet” wich tries to pull us to its center…the universe cant pull anything, only mass can pull…
Oh and Nick, our Moon is slowly stealing the Earth’s angular momentum via our tides. Thus slowing the Earth’s spin. Eventually, both the Earth and the Moon will stop spinning.
you people do realize none of the planets are perfectly verticle right n the reason y the word doesnt jus completely drop is because there is no gravity in space to pull it down
Dude, it seems just like everyone fits on the “idiotic” bag planets aren’t still O.o the apple suffers the strenght from many “magnetic fields”, earth’s one “feels” stronger cause it’s closer to earth, i mean, put the f**king apple on the mid point between the sun and the earth, and it will get closer to sun. Damn, i don’t know if i wrote “good” i’m spanish -.-!
What worries me the most is that this kid obviously doesn’t/didn’t pay attention in school, and that means he’s very likely to screw up my order when I ask for “no pickles” on my burger at McDonald’s, where someone of his mental capacity will definitely be spending their life working.
What makes the pickles stay on the bun, and not, like, go flying off??? Why is the bun still, and the meat making a crackling sound? So many questions!
And even if it doesn’t have pickles… it might have “pickle squeezings”. The snottier someone gets about their order, the more likely some delinquent is to perform a childish method of revenge.
That said… why is it so hard to get extra pickles? I’ll take the ones you don’t want…
I… holy crap… just… When you have to end a sentence with “this might make me look like an idiot” (or idoit), it will, so you should probably just look it up rather than expose your idiocy.
This is almost as bad as the woman who asked whether the Sun was a star or a planet in an astronomy class I took.
WELLL…Weather you ask him for no pickles or not, your order being wrong has nothing to do with the cashier ringing you up, it has everything to do with the cooks in the back making your order. I have seen tons of orders that were rang up correctly, but the cook will make it wrong, put it in the wrong box or wrapper, or the wrong sandwich was just accidentally grabbed. And don’t think that only stupid highschool drop out kids work at McDonalds, because we have had MANY people with yrs of college experience and full resumes come up and apply for a job with us.
“What happens to the sun when it goes down?”
“Are you stupid? It turns into the moon!”
^^^ Perfectly serious conversation between two girls in my high school physics class. Yes, such morons do in fact exist.
I bet half of the people making fun of this person don’t know the answer to it either. They just spew some stupid ass answer like “gravity” or “physics”.
and before some idiot goes “that is the answer dumbass”, understand that you can answer almost every question about space by saying “physics” or “energy”.
explain to me what those are without looking it up on the internet, then we can see how much of an idiot this guy is.
don’t ask me why im all flustered about this. I don’t know either haha.
See, that’s why I haven’t tried to give an actual answer. All I know is what people have told me, and I’m not a physicist. I haven’t delved into the mysteries of the universe, because that isn’t my field and it never will be; I’m just plain not good at it. I seriously do not understand the complex workings of all of this stuff. Obviously, she doesn’t either, and I can’t berate her for that.
Granted, I understand that, as far as we know, the universe does not work the way she theorized that it does. But I also don’t really understand how it does work. It doesn’t mean that I’m stupid, just that my brain doesn’t work in a way that comprehends that kind of thinking. My strengths lie in biology, languages, history, psychology, and a lot of other things that have absolutely nothing to do with physics.
Seriously, it’s not a crime to not understand something. Everyone on this site may very well have asked the same question once if they hadn’t been taught the answer. They didn’t discover it themselves. At least she is asking instead of just being apathetic about not knowing.
Maybe we are falling…maybe all the planets and moons and stars are falling at the same rate so we just don’t notice. OR maybe because there is no gravity pulling the Earth down. I can’t remember which!
Maybe he should have looked up a text book or searched a reputable inet site. Fact is schools still teach that atoms have nice little planetary orbiting electrons where we know it has been debunked for many decades. He should have followed this saying- Better to be silent and have people think you a fool than open your mouth and confirm you are a fool
Even if it is a bit naive, at least it shows someone who has curiosity about the universe and how it works. It is the first step to becoming a truly educated thinking person. So many people are stuffed with facts, but are really only concerned about getting to the next level of their video game. I think that is more of a fail.
Wow..no right answer yet? lol. And everything still moves up and down in all because our solar system revolves around the center of the galaxy and wobbles also. Reasons why we move is the push(not pull) force from other large objects draw things in.. if we’re not near those objects than we won’t move. We go towards the earth because of the push of the mass of the earth has. Dark matter has a role in this too? I think. Einsteinian physics? lol i’m not an expert so I can’t really elaborate.
>groaaaaaaaan< omg. So. Many. Things. WRONG with this post.
I'm gonna go back to watching "The big bang theory" And regain the IQ points I lost in the past 2 minutes reading this post and the following thread.
TV isn’t the source of the problem, it’s the quality of the programming.
Secondly, even tho I made the post at around 4AM last night, the time stamp sez 12:05, going with that, there is no TBBT on at that time, hence your assumption that I’m watching TBBT on TV is wrong. (thank you contraband bandwidth)
Who’s lacking IQ points?
Laugh track or not, TBBT is frakkin’ funny, well written and the terminology, theories, diagrams and formulae are generally correct. Even for network TV programming.
QED, a TV show easily found on the internet makes more sense than 70% of the conversations going on in this thread.
hey really if you haven’t checked out johns fail posted May 16, 2010 at 12:29 am you should check it out…i will share his fail with you. i am not greedy…it taste sooo delish kanish…hmmmmm enjoy johns fail with me
Further, unless the LHC coaxes the Higgs boson out of hiding, gravity doesn’t seem to be a “force” in the same sense as electromagnetism; that is, there appears to be no fundamental particle “carrying” gravitic force the way electrons convey electricity.
Instead, at least by Einstein’s Theory of Special Relativity, it would appear to be a field effect, caused by the influence of mass on space – the greater the mass, the more dramatically space is curved, and thus the greater gravity experienced.
Were it possible to use electromagnetic forces to counter gravitational effects, we’d have antigravity by now…
what would you say about monorail trains. and it is possible…and you misquote einstien. Theory of relativity is based on space time and how gravity affects its…and the speed of light ect… and as awesome as eintstien was many of his theories have been proved incorrect. Although the man was a hero and made it possbile
you a troll? gravity doesn’t have anything to do with molten cores. hell, magnetism is only related to molten cores by the fact that moving charges create a magnetic feild, and magnetism certainly doesn’t only occur in those conditions.
” like saying bone marrow and blood is not related. ”
wow, strain your analogies much? are bone marrow and blood also “born from nearly identical conditions ” ?
ummm yes…bone marrow makes blood…well red blood cells. and the molten core is the reason there is gravity AND magnetism. The roation of the core causes the earth to spin creating gravity AND the rotation of metal around a metal surface…AKA the molten iron core rotating around “super” heavy metals that make up the inner core create a magnetic field thousands of times stronger then the gravity field it creates. and you can’t even spell field. you fail. please do us all a favor…dont breed.
Well… Around the equator of the earth is a big piece of string. The string is attached to a large mobile which plays music when it rotates. This music is what we as humans call “birdsong”. The other planets are also attached to the mobile, as is the sun, which is in the centre of our solar system mobile.
we actually learned this last week in science. The sun keeps us in the orbital paths, and our gravity keeps us from flying into the sun. and we ARE NOT STILL!!!! moron….
“No man really becomes a fool until he stops asking questions.”
Questions are fine to ask and actually share, no matter how silly they seem or come off as. If we stopped asking questions because ‘know it alls’ pulled the same discrimination that the majority of you are, the world would become one big closed minded wreck.
Stupid questions that come from pure curiosity are what makes the world as fascinating as it is, because those who ask ‘stupid’ questions are the ones that make you wonder.
This is not a fail. Gravity is, without question, one of the great mysteries of science. Not Einstein, not Newton, not anybody has figured out all its true workings.
You guys are all wrong! It’s because of people in Australia, NZ and Antarctica pushing up by standing on the bottom of the planet. What are you guys retards?
Okay, there are many smart people on this site. But riddle me this:
If space was never created, and someone was around to see this, what would they see. They obviously wouldn’t see space…
Um, no, the planets and everything else are constantly “falling” from the center of the universe, if you believe in the big bang theory. so the planets aren’t motionless
It is in fact a good question which is asked. The only question which is forgotten, where does it fall too?
Explanation also for dummies!
As many of you suggested that the sun is that spot, and that is true. (“for the smart asses here….” The middle of the universe is that far away that it isn’t important for earth, only for the galaxy and beyond)
Two masses attract each other. The sun is one big “burning” sphere of gas with a huge mass. The sun pulls earth towards him, but because earth also has mass, earth pulls also the sun towards it, at least, with much less force that to the lower mass. (for the smart asses, “burning” means fusion with a sphere consisting of hydrogen as main component. Besides that there are some heavier elements, which were made by fusion.)
All masses attract each other, which is for two birds, very small, very very small. Even when you have sex with your girlfriend, there is some gravity between you and it is stronger, then when your shopping together (i hope), which is caused by the distance between the two objects.
Which prevents the earth from “falling” towards the sun, has the same reason why your thrown out of the car during a turn. Earth has a speed through the galaxy, which has been calculated (don’t know what it is). The gravity (the force of which the sun is pulling it towards him) is like turning the steering wheel. The wheels makes the car turn (duhh), so the gravity makes earth turn. Your body wants to “leave” the car in the other direction. Just like that, earth wants to leave its orbit around the sun. The force which the sun pulls the earth towards him and the force what pushes earth out of orbit, are equal which result in no changes what so ever.
Actually according to my Physics teacher,”everything is constantly falling in the universe, including Earth, but since it is at a constant speed we do not feel it”
Do you know like we were saying, about the Earth revolving? It’s like when you’re a kid, the first time they tell you that the world is turning and you just can’t quite believe it ’cause everything looks like it’s standing still. I can feel it. The turn of the Earth. The ground beneath our feet is spinning at a thousand miles an hour. The entire planet is hurtling around the sun at sixty seven thousand miles an hour. And I can feel it. We’re falling through space, you and me, clinging to the skin of this tiny little world. And, if we let go….
It actually has been theorized that since space is infinite and never ending that the planets could actually be falling. but due to the absence of air resistance I don’t see how this could even come to pass as a thought.
BIG BANG BOOM!
…
You know he’s right?!
That fb dude must be a Christian or somethin’
Actually we are held in place by a wonderful thing called gravity……A big bang somehow creating the physics involved in our earth going round a massive nuclear reaction that supplies us with heat without killing us? The chance of that is as much as you’d get when you divide my zero…..
So infinitely probable then?
Win win win.
Obviously 0 is not inf. And inf is not a number.
No if f**king well did not! Don’t you ever even any???
the earth is not held in place by its own gravity.
It is called the three body problem and if you are interested here’s a link where it is explained better than I could:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Euler%27s_three-body_problem
there is no gravity in face smart one -_-……..this should be on failbook also XD
if our solar system didnt have an astroid belt would its pants fall down?
Hehehheheheheh niiiiice one.
Pants on da ground!
Pants on da ground!
Walking round the solar system like a fool
Wif your pants on da ground!
The you’d see Uranus
lol
I don’t know, man, space is a mindf**k when you think about it. Yeah, inertia and all that keeps us circling around the sun, but really, given how unpredictable it is, what’s to stop something from changing one day? And causing us to just hurtle out someplace?
Physics.
Hahahaha, it’s like Snoop Dogg did a physics degree
It’s called Equilibrium.. It does wonders
Good movie, too.
the only movie i’ve ever seen where a katana was used correctly i.e. without blocking
You’re not falling “in space” you’re falling “toward the sun”. There is no ceiling, but the sun is the floor.
http://xkcd.com/681/
I never actually thought of it in that manner. That sounds awesome when put that way.
The floor really is hot lava! :O
(Yes, I know that the sun is not lava.)
No but you can “fall” or lets better say “move” towards other objects.
The sun pulls on the earth, the earth moves around the sun at high speed and thuse doesnt fall towards the sun.
Its basically the same principle as the ISS or Spaceshuttle in Orbit around the earth.
At least thats how i remeber it from HS ….
My brain hurts >.<
*snarf* yes.. mine too.
This must be a different meaning of the word “unpredictable” than I’m familiar with.
It’s the definition that goes, “I’m too stupid to understand this.”
Though, “still” is the wrong wording. It should be “what keeps the planets on the same vertical position?”
It’s all a balance of gravity and centipetal force that keeps everything in orbit. Not sure what keeps the panet at the same angle, though. Maybe it’s because there are no forces that would change that?
that’s exactly what it is. there is only one force affecting the earch and thats the suns gravity. there is no force slowing it down and there is no force pushing it “up” or “down”, so it remains at the angle at which it is
Well the Earth (and other planets) and rotating on their axis as well, and the fact is that the axis IS changing slowly.
Their respective axes that is.
wrong. the law of gravity says that everything pulls on everything else.
YOU’RE ALL WRONG! THE UNIVERSE IS HOW IT IS BECAUSE GOD KEEPS IT THAT WAY! PICK UP A BIBLE GUYS, YEESH XD
fail.
You fail at life.
yes pick up a bible, base everything you believe on a work of fiction, that’s a good plan for sure
fail hard.
you might as well trust in Frodo Baggins, Mary Poppins, or Garfield the cat!
since harry potter is a book it probably means it’s real
jaka was being sarcastic, don’t get so worked up.
Of course, sarcasm don’t work well on the interwebs.
I think you just explained an annotation from The Annotated Alice mentioning this when Humpty Dumpty fell. Thank you kind sir or madam.
Argh. That was a reply to Dorkothy Parker.
…. it is the mighty xenu that holds up the univers open your eyes.
Go to hell.
I apologize for everyone who apparently can’t recognize sarcasm in spite of the all-caps and THE F**KING EMOTICON.
Next time, trying using [/sarcasm] at the end of the post. It’s not idiot-proof, but it helps.
Fail at everyone who can’t identify this as a troll…
All the planets are on same plane because they formed from the extra gases that were left spinning outward in a disc after our local star was created. Pluto has a weird orbit because it’s not a planet, rather an Kuiper belt object that was massive enough to collapse on itself making it spherical.
Centipetal? That isn’t a word. The closest word would be centipedal, and that’s the definition of the class Chilopoda.
Did you mean centrifugal? Fail.
Centripetal. He was one letter short. chill.
No he means centRipetal, there is no centrifugal force. The centrifugal force was made up, because most people don’t seem to grasp centripetal forces. You fail.
Indeed centrifugal force is the imaginary “outward” force or rotation, that is there to help people understand.
But if that’s true, why do you feel as if you’re going to fly out of a car that turns a corner fast?
(I do know the answer, BTW. This is a test. This is only a test….)
That doesn’t, however, mean the force is actually there, but it is a term describing the force that you FEEL.
No, he means centipedal. Centipedes are responsible for the Earth’s orbit around the sun! Something to do with all those legs.
So I take it he’s not being an idiot if all this is needed to explain it. Way to go on getting a fail that isn’t an actual fail, Failbook…
-.-
I seriously hope your being sarcastic…
No, totally serious. Every planet has centipedes that keep them in orbit. Little known fact.
win
Human Centipede?
Lol!

The planets angle is not constant, every (not sure) x period of years, the angle changes slightly.
There is no such thing as “vertical” in space, if you ask me… ;_)
do you mean why don’t the planets fall down? it’s because there is no down in outer space. when something falls down, it’s because there’s a planet underneath. But in space, there’s no ground, only big things like the sun that we like to orbit around.
if it were*
yes but now we KNOW WHY so its idiotic to ask a question that everybody knows
Nothing is “balancing” it. OHMYGAWD. Plus you cant determine whether its moving. You’d have to have a point of reference. And who are you to say that this point of reference is right? This reference point is probably moving in reference to something else. And what makes things “fall”? gravity. There is no one great source of gravity below all the planets and galaxies. Wed be zooming into a black hole. Everything pulls on everything, and it’s pretty well balanced. BOOM.
“what’s balancing the vertical position?
Think of it.”
Nothing needs to “balance” because there’s no force in that direction to balance out.
No significant force, anyway. Any net force in the “vertical” direction would also act on the Sun, and accelerate it in that direction as well.
So, there’s really none of what we think of as “station-keeping” required.
That would be the moon….
The same thing that balances a ball on a vertical plane if you spun it around on the end of a string. Centrifugal/centripetal force.
Except centrifugal force doesn’t exist….yup the universe is a mindf**k sometimes.
It is stupid to ask now because the questions have been answered. We know why the apple falls down.
That’s because LEARNING it is something completely different from FINDING IT OUT YOURSELF.
Distance also weakens the force of gravity.
huge magnetic forces we call the poles and the are constantly shifting as well the Earth.
we have a huge molten core or iron (amongst other things) and the rotation of the Earth creates massive magnetic forces that act in opposite of the suns Gravity, also the sun has opposing gravitational forces that not only draw things into its orbit but also creates a buffer around itself
Gravity and the Magnetic force DO NOT INTERACT !
It is responsible for keeping the Earth and the other planets in their orbits around the Sun; for keeping the Moon in its orbit around the Earth; for the formation of tides; for convection, by which fluid flow occurs under the influence of a density gradient and gravity; for heating the interiors of forming stars and planets to very high temperatures; and for various other phenomena observed on Earth
omg more fail for john…nom nom nom
Sorry, but John was right. Gravitational and magnetic fields do not interact in standard conditions.
It seems you didn’t understand a word of the Wikipedia articles you posted. Magnetism has nothing to do with keeping Earth on its orbit.
actually the opposing forces of earths magnetic forces and and the forces of the sun interact hugely. if you read the second article the push pull of the suns magnetic fields are the reasons we stay in orbit versus be sucked into or closer to the sun.
Dr. Louis Barbier
(November 2002)
that one had nothing to do with gravity OR magnetism, the distance to the sun varies because the earth, like all planets, is in a elliptical orbit.
btw, even though you’re just regurgitating text, I would point out that in the southern hemisphere, the earth is FARTHER from the sun in the summer.
typo correction, ^ farther from the sun in the winter
lol, I don’t think you understand any of that.
In fact as has already been said somewhere else in these comments the Earth stays in orbit because it has angular momentum conserved from its creation from the proto-planetary disc left over from the Sun’s own creation.
ok so i dumbed it down…really this isnt the smartest crowded…my evidence is above
its opposing forces of magnetism WITHIN the sun AND the magnetic forces of the Earth. The other magnetic force of the sun, the one that is pulling us closer keeps us in orbit verses taking a similiar path to say a comet…which has gravity but not significant magnetic force.
ok mis-repped my distances its not .80 it .98 and not 1.05 its 1.1
and further note. i am not saying that gravity affects magnetism i am saying that gravity and magnetism affect the earths orbit…although according to string and brane theorm there would be effects on each other but it is not relevant to this discussion
and the theory of everything as well as the unified field theory
If magnetism was responsible for variations in orbit, how do you explain this?
lol
It wouldn’t be idiotic if the answers to his question weren’t already readily available and really well known. It wasn’t idiotic when Newton thought about it because no one had before.
we are in a vertical position, it depends on the position and angle of your point of reference. e.g. if you were laying down sideways, the wall would appear to be the ceiling and vice versa.
“…then thinking of why apples fall down and not up would have been idiotic too.”
What if they’re more like giant cherries?
There are so many things wrong this, I don’t even know where to start. How about the fact that the planets aren’t still?
*Facepalm*
i think he’s high
The Education system fails yet again, on so many levels.
F*CKING MAGNETS. HOW DO THEY WORK?
F**KIN MAGNETS
Dear arahman32 and Matthew y’all are almost as retarded as the Facebook post. Go look up centripetal force, angular momentum, Newton’s Laws, precession, and basically anything on our solar system. After that you MAY have some room to talk about how our universe works. Until then, just don’t talk.
Omg, some of the people writing the comments here isn’t much better themself..
I don’t know which educational system he followed but I learned that by fifth grade. In public school.
I don’t think it’s an education fail, I think it’s a complete idiot fail. Huge difference. One can be changed, the other can’t.
He’s an idiot for asking a question? For being interested in science?
F’N PLANETS, HOW DO THEY WORK?
ppl nowdayz haz no logic? Droping down is a wrong therm anyways, its more like the planet is a big “magnet” wich tries to pull us to its center…the universe cant pull anything, only mass can pull…
Oh and Nick, our Moon is slowly stealing the Earth’s angular momentum via our tides. Thus slowing the Earth’s spin. Eventually, both the Earth and the Moon will stop spinning.
I find this very illogical, nah not really just plain funny.
What he’s asking doesn’t make him an idiot. It’s the fact that he wrote “idiot” wrong. And yes, irony is noted. lol
Lol every comment is a fail XD
you people do realize none of the planets are perfectly verticle right n the reason y the word doesnt jus completely drop is because there is no gravity in space to pull it down
No, not an idiot. An idoit.
anyone else notice he typoed. its IDIOT, not idioit
Dude, it seems just like everyone fits on the “idiotic” bag
planets aren’t still O.o the apple suffers the strenght from many “magnetic fields”, earth’s one “feels” stronger cause it’s closer to earth, i mean, put the f**king apple on the mid point between the sun and the earth, and it will get closer to sun. Damn, i don’t know if i wrote “good” i’m spanish -.-!
And how do those magnets work, anyway?
he spelled idiot wrong..amongst other things..
…actually, he typed “idoit”. Does this count as the grammatic equivalent of a double negative?
A double negative would be grammatical. Idoit would be the spelling equivalent.
How often do those “no pickles” order actually not have pickles in them? For me it’s usually a 50/50 gamble when I ask for no pickles.
Exactly. It’s a gamble, because of morons like this. I wouldn’t waste my breath except it’s worth it the 1-2 times in life they get it right.
Just give ME all your pickles and we’ll be happy. I can never get extra
Its not that they are idiots, its just they dont care
And even if it doesn’t have pickles… it might have “pickle squeezings”. The snottier someone gets about their order, the more likely some delinquent is to perform a childish method of revenge.
That said… why is it so hard to get extra pickles? I’ll take the ones you don’t want…
ya..seems to me with all this geek talk…the education system is on overload!!
this stuff would be “geek talk” amongst grade-schoolers, perhaps.
SO! *U* Fail :p
I always ask for the “Pickle Lover’s Special”. This insures there will be no pickles at all in my order.
A. it’s gravity and b. you misspelled “idiot”
The earth is resting on a giant turtle which is resting on another giant turtle, which is resting on another giant turtle which is etc on another etc.
“It’s no good, it’s turtles all the way down”
It’s turtles all the way down, I think.
WOW,
Same joke within 6 minutes of each other.
WEIRD.
Please, tell me this is fake! Please, tell me such morons do not exist!
Welcom to the World =)
The Human world that is (I can’t speak for other sentient species).
“What happens to the sun when it goes down?”
“Are you stupid? It turns into the moon!”
^^^ Perfectly serious conversation between two girls in my high school physics class. Yes, such morons do in fact exist.
I would, but that would be a lie.
This is not fake… she is one of the many retards in my classes
It’s turtles all the way down.
At least she is asking instead of just being apathetic about not knowing.
ur dumb
There are so many virgins up in here.
Maybe we are falling…maybe all the planets and moons and stars are falling at the same rate so we just don’t notice. OR maybe because there is no gravity pulling the Earth down. I can’t remember which!
Turtles, all the way down.
C’mon people, it’s the turtle. And yes, there ARE turtles all the way down.
The same thing that is keeping Justin Bieber’s balls from dropping…
Its really simple.. the answer is gravity.
Let’s just tell him it’s “grabity”! You know, the stuff that grabs on to everything and holds it still!! LMFAO!
PURE MOTHAF**KIN’ MAGIC, YO! YOU CAN’T EVEN SEE IT!.
F*CKIN MAGNETS
F*CKING MAGNETS MAN THEIR INVISIBLE AND THEIR EVERYWHERE MAN
I like to stick my penis in warm holes in the ground.
I hope this kid is like 12 and just hasn’t paid attention in science class yet.
Actually….. she is 12
hahaha
“might”?!
Even if it is a bit naive, at least it shows someone who has curiosity about the universe and how it works. It is the first step to becoming a truly educated thinking person. So many people are stuffed with facts, but are really only concerned about getting to the next level of their video game. I think that is more of a fail.
Based on the discussions held in the comments, I’d say this person isn’t an idiot. An idiot is incapable of learning. This person is just ignorant.
In space, any direction can be up.
It’s turtles all the way down.
I think. Einsteinian physics? lol i’m not an expert so I can’t really elaborate.
thingsraquelhates.blogspot.com
There are four elephants, on wich the earth rests. These elephants stand on a giant turtle, which swims in an endless ocean.
Really! Honest!
WIN.
He isn’t stupid, he is high…
>groaaaaaaaan< omg. So. Many. Things. WRONG with this post.
I'm gonna go back to watching "The big bang theory" And regain the IQ points I lost in the past 2 minutes reading this post and the following thread.
Watching TV will hardly do anything for you (I mean even BBT has a damn laugh track) – read a book if you want some IQ points back
TV isn’t the source of the problem, it’s the quality of the programming.
MAGNETS, HOW THE F’K DO THEY WORK??!
This kid probably listens to ICP
hey really if you haven’t checked out johns fail posted May 16, 2010 at 12:29 am you should check it out…i will share his fail with you. i am not greedy…it taste sooo delish kanish…hmmmmm enjoy johns fail with me
Sorry, but John was right. Gravitational and magnetic fields do not interact in standard conditions.
It seems you didn’t understand a word of the Wikipedia articles you posted. Magnetism has nothing to do with keeping Earth on its orbit.
Although the man was a hero and made it possbile
you mean Einsteins theory of general relativity.
you a troll? gravity doesn’t have anything to do with molten cores. hell, magnetism is only related to molten cores by the fact that moving charges create a magnetic feild, and magnetism certainly doesn’t only occur in those conditions.
The roation of the core causes the earth to spin creating gravity AND the rotation of metal around a metal surface…AKA the molten iron core rotating around “super” heavy metals that make up the inner core create a magnetic field thousands of times stronger then the gravity field it creates. and you can’t even spell field. you fail. please do us all a favor…dont breed.
epic fail! rotation doesn’t create gravity, gravity is the attraction between two masses wheather htey are rotating or not.
public school fail
f’ing magnet, how do they work!?
You are all wrong! Its just MAGIC… hhahahhehehehhee
you idoit!!!!!
Well… Around the equator of the earth is a big piece of string. The string is attached to a large mobile which plays music when it rotates. This music is what we as humans call “birdsong”. The other planets are also attached to the mobile, as is the sun, which is in the centre of our solar system mobile.
Get it now?
if i am going to be proved wong…it is by you me
CORRECTION:
Yes… You Are An Idoit
AND ALSO!!!!
THIS IS A SHE NOT A HE
He spelled “idiot” wrong.
i dont think anyone else even noticed that.
Come on, we can all be idoits every once in a while. Lol.
we actually learned this last week in science.
Stupid questions that come from pure curiosity are what makes the world as fascinating as it is, because those who ask ‘stupid’ questions are the ones that make you wonder.
yea, and why don’t people fall off the bottom of the earth?
god help me I want to explain it to him. I want to explain it to all of them, everywhere.
This is not a fail. Gravity is, without question, one of the great mysteries of science. Not Einstein, not Newton, not anybody has figured out all its true workings.
I did while I was eating a McChicken Sandwich with lots of mayo and some lettuce. Didn’t like the fries though! Ahaha
F**kin’ magnets
F***kin’ magnets
You guys are all wrong! It’s because of people in Australia, NZ and Antarctica pushing up by standing on the bottom of the planet. What are you guys retards?
ilu
The planets…are not still. Ever heard of day and night and seasons???
Okay, there are many smart people on this site. But riddle me this:
If space was never created, and someone was around to see this, what would they see. They obviously wouldn’t see space…
Wait, what?
I bet it’s a blond girl…
Wow, remind me never to go swimming in that gene pool. I would slap you but what good would it do?
The Earth IS falling! It’s just falling down an infinitely deep hole and everything else is falling at the exact same rate as the earth.
Um, no, the planets and everything else are constantly “falling” from the center of the universe, if you believe in the big bang theory. so the planets aren’t motionless
MIGHT make him/her sound like an idiot? MIGHT! Lol
Oh my… wow. That’s just… oh wow.
For more information… (wikipedia)
Both forces can be calculated with newton’s law of universal gravitation
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Newton's_law_of_universal_gravitation
and centrifugal force
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Centrifugal_force_(rotating_reference_frame).
Sorry for my bad english
GERONIMO!
That’s what I said with a shorter explanation XD
Yeah, it might…
It actually has been theorized that since space is infinite and never ending that the planets could actually be falling. but due to the absence of air resistance I don’t see how this could even come to pass as a thought.
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH *head explodes*
…can we just get back to funny comments at this instead of technoscience babble thats causing me to hear my brains cells pop inside my head?
Gandalf.
when in doubt, Gandalf.
