  1. my names taken says:

    L2 SPELLCHECK

  2. The Amazing Shea says:

    I get it!

    :p

  3. Brandon says:

Lord, why did you make Texans so generally stupid?

  4. This is one of my all-time favorites!!! Oh, and I’m a Texan and I’m far from stupid! O.K., not that far from stupid, he’s around here somewhere. lol

  5. Technically speaking, it depends: a “federated state” is not the same as a nation, but both “sovereign state” and “nation state” are synonymous with “nation.”

So it really depends on what state you’re in. ;)

  6. Canadianroo says:

And the American Education system fails again…

  7. ThatsMrTexanToYou says:

No, seriously, get on I-35… You’ll be right next to stupid! (and stupid’s brother, sister, cousin, niece, grandprents……)

  8. FYI says:

Actually a state is a nation, as an American I understand most Americans dont know what a state really is. But the United States of America is another way of saying The United Nations of America.

    • Dag-Erling says:

Umm, remember the Pledge of Allegiance? “One nation under God”? Ring a bell?

A state is a political concept, a nation is a social / cultural concept. Thus the USA are one nation composed of fifty states; Canada is one nation composed of four provinces; Germany is one nation composed of sixteen states; etc. The word “nation” is also used for social / cultural / ethnic groups that do not correspond to a specific sovereign state, e.g. native Americans, Kurds, Roma.

      • GingerKid says:

FYI, Canada is one Nation with 10 Provinces, and 3 Territories.

Also, being placed within the boundaries of a state provides one with said sense of cultural connectivity, which would be how it could be seen as a nation. The fact that the various stereotypes differ when talking about people from different states demonstrates this.

  9. Jason Davis says:

People in Texas generally seem to believe that the rest of the country thinks about Texas on a regular basis.

    • Texan says:

No.. people in Texas generally don’t think about your states because ours is bigger, better, and full of more guns. ;)

If you want to think about us though, you’re more than welcome. We are that awesome.

  10. chris says:

very witty remark at the bottom, made me chuckle

  11. Cavane says:

Also a history fail on the part of the last commenter. Texas Independence Day, also known as San Jacinto Day, refers to the day on which Texas won its independence from Mexico, not the day on which Texas seceded from the United States.

    • Angryskeleton says:

Yeah, actually the fail here is not where most people think it is, and they fail as much :P Especially if they write comments proving their ignorance.

    • Matteus says:

      Thanks for the lesson, teach.
I think the last comment was just snide.
Uuuuummm….on question… What day was it that Texas seceded from the U.S? :-P

    • hfjkdf says:

they gained independence from one nation and then became part of another, so why celebrate independence if they don’t try again as per the punny comment? you’re being too harsh

    • Texas history buff says:

No. Texas Independence Day is when we signed our Declaration of Independence from the Nation of Mexico. That was March 2, 1836. It’s the Texas version of the Fourth of July. The Alamo fell 4 days later on March 6th. San Jacinto didn’t happen until the end of April. That day is also celebrated, but the biggest party is in San Antonio. They call it Fiesta, and it’s a week long shindig.

  12. noname says:

    state=nation
    that means win kiddies

  13. Hope says:

I’m from Alabama, I can sympathize.

  14. Schaffer says:

Product of the world’s only Superpower nation. The rest of the globe should shudder at that notion.

  15. Schaffer says:

    Or, maybe Americans should.

  16. randomnerd says:

Yeah… George Bush really screwed over your reputation as a state, didn’t he? But I know otherwise, I once dated a very nice, intelligent girl from Texas. The stereotypes are wrong.

    • Inkman says:

Lest the rest of the country forget, George W. Bush was not in any way a Texan. He was not born in Texas, his ancestors were not from Texas, and he was voted “all hat and no cattle” by the Texas Legislature while he was still the usurping governor. also note that his “election to the governor’s mansion was followed by the same controversy about the election as his 2 “terms” in the white house.

  17. 2wm says:

i say we sell Texas back to Mexico. sure, we’ll look someone took a bite out of us but it’s more like having a growth removed. and my wife’s from Texas and agrees.

    • Page says:

Before you go making asinine comments like that maybe you should do a little research into what all is produced in, imported to the us through, and how much more border the country would have to attempt to protect if the U.S. decides to “sell” Texas back. Also, Texas cannot be “sold” back, we were never purchased.

  18. Fail on the part of the commenter. Texas Independence refers to winning it’s independence from Mexico. The status is probably joking that Texas is so important, the rest of the country should celebrate, too.

Btw, Texas IS legally allowed to secede. It is the only state that can do this.

    • TXTrish says:

Actually, I believe that Texas has the right to divide into 5 states, but not to secede. I googled and found “There is no verbiage in the Texas Constitution, the US Constitution, or the Texas Annexation Agreement that expressly grants the State of Texas the right to secede from the Union. The Annexation agreement that resulted in Texas becoming a state in 1845 allows Texas to be broken up into 5 total states.”

My take on the original post about Texas Independence Day was that the comment was “tongue in cheek”. People from other states may not appreciate Texas humor. ;)

    • Cavane says:

Yeah, that’s an urban legend, as is the popular story about Texas being the only state that can fly its flag the same height as the US flag. In fact, Texas was not the only state to have been its own country. California was an independent nation for about a month until the US Navy parked on the coast and basically said “You’re joining.”

      • Renee says:

Not to Mention that the first state to join after the original thirteen was a standing Republic four years before the US.

Oh, and Hawaii was a Monarchy.

  19. C.R. says:

And it took Chuck Norris to play a Texas Ranger.

  20. Dale says:

If Texas secedes from the US, maybe Austin should secede from Texas.

  21. MikeApple says:

If at first you don’t succeed, you fail.

  22. Actually.. the Texas flag flies higher than the Nation’s flag, not the same height, but higher.
When the state sent its capital blueprints to D.C to be approved(or wherever they went to be approved), the person approving it, didn’t notice that the blueprints didn’t have the dome that was to be added on later. The flag being put on the dome then on top of the approved blueprints actually put the flag higher than D.C’s.
