….are you kidding me?! Glad to know my hard earn tax dollars that go towards his unemployment will pay for his new Xbox.

    • William says:

      Um no.

The employer pays a tax and they will recoup this cost elsewhere (either through higher prices, lower wages, or less employees). In addition however, the ‘extensions’ approved by Congress eventually have to paid from somewhere (and considering many states unemployment funds are ‘broke’ that means higher taxes elsewhere to regrow the funding for unemployment accounts). This idiot (and apparently yourself) believe the ‘government fairy’ just gives us things or that you’re ‘sticking it’ to your former company. But in the end, unemployment is paid for through taxation, which indirectly affects you whether you like it or not

Easy to insult someone you’re not standing face-to-face to, huh? I love internet tough guys.

        • William says:

Don’t worry Sam. Several times a day I take time to call someone an idiot to their face IRL with their American Idol, government will take care of us addled view of the world.

As to your question Krys that’s the point of it isn’t it? When the federal government decided to extend ‘benefits’ by up to 52 weeks, the money in the unemployment coffers of the states drained up (not to mention also because the influx of unemployed..). Some states are out of money, some are cutting back because tax dollars to pay for other services have to go to unemployment, and some have just given up all illusion of pride and are begging at the federal government’s doorstep. Either way the extra ‘benefits’ are coming out of your tax dollars even more. It’s subsidization in another format and we’re paying for it.

He’s more of an internet intellectual then tough guy
at least he knows what he is talking about…

…Seeing how this is clearly your first time on the internet, I would like to welcome you.

      • Jon says:

There’s one small problem with jumping to any conclusions here:

You have no idea at all how long he had been with his former employer, nor what his salary had been. Because the maximum weekly unemployment benefit is capped at a fairly low level — low enough that if you used to make $100K a year it’s less than 25% of what you’d been making — it’s actually possible, given enough tenure and salary, that you don’t even get back as much as you and your employer contributed. Especially if you land another job within 2-3 months.

Probably not the case with the guy in this post, but still a possibility.

      • Marie says:

        William, I heart you! :)

    • Krys says:

Unemployment insurance It’s actually part of your compensation that the employer pays while employing you. The question becomes, does the gov’t kick in any more money (your normal tax dollars) to cover shortfalls (because not enough unemployment tax was payed in)

    • Brian says:

A typical statement by someone who doesn’t understand basic economics. Thanks for the smackdown, William.

    • SamSucksAtLife says:

      William for the win.
      Sam sucks balls.

  2. Anonkip says:

Well this reminds me of our local Danish dream (Denmarkistan.)

    a) You flee from your country as you’re being hunted out by war.
    b) You file for unemployment.
    c) PROFIT!

  3. Julie says:

    LoL wtfpwnt Chefmike!

  4. Lisa Hellen says:

Sad thing is, I actually know someone like this. No, no longer a friend.

  5. oliebygolly says:

Submitter here. He was in the Military, so technically, your tax dollars ARE going to his unemployment. Have fun with that one.

    • Ben says:

If he was in the military I don’t mind, I’ll personally save the money to buy him an XBox. Otherwise, these unemployment extensions are state budget killers. Ah yes, life in NY.

  6. N monster says:

“New Xbox” could just as easily be a replacement for one that was purchased years ago and broke down. Doesn’t necessarily mean it’s costing anything.

  7. Bhazor says:

    How taxes work.

    You pay tax.
Goverment uses tax to pay unemployed guy.
    Unemployed guy spends money.
    Company gets money.
    Company pays tax.

  8. Someone says:

I don’t see what’s bad about this: we don’t know why he’s unemployed, perhaps he was just fired because the company needed to fire some people due to their financial situation. So, just because he got fired he deserves no fun? He’s getting the same treatment as other unemployed people. If his life is pretty cheap so he has money left from the unemployment payment, let him spend that money instead of going all “boo! get away you unemployed person!”.

    • Jeremy says:

You’re right, we don’t know the specifics of his situation.

There is one thing we can be sure of though: people on unemployment shouldn’t be purchasing X-Boxes. Even if we forget about the money, he should be concentrating on something more productive than video games; for example, ANYTHING.

  9. ihazfive says:

An Obama voter by any other name…

  10. bret z says:

The guy can spend his unemployment however he wants, he earned it. Also, you cannot get unemployment for being fired, only laid-off (fired for economic reasons). It’s not a bailout, there is unemployment insurance for this reason. Times are tight, but everyone pays every week. It would be like taking a vacation with money paid to you after an auto accident. It’s your money, it doesn’t matter how you spend it.

  11. KS says:

That must be part of the 2009-2010 government version of the Screw-U-More package……..

  12. Wade Wilson says:

    You do that Im proud.
